Hello!
I'm Katie. I'm 30 years old, been married for two years to my high school sweetheart. We've been together a total of 12 years. I'm a pediatric nurse, but I work primarily with 1-18 year olds with neurological issues (I do care for the occasional infant, too).
We decided that we were ready to start trying for our first child. Dutifully, I went to the OB/GYN. She seemed encouraged by my regular 27-28 day cycle, convinced me to stop smoking (and I did--seven weeks now! I know, as a nurse I never should have been smoking anyway. Husband quit, too!). However, we found a minor setback, as we found that I am hypothyroid. I'm not THAT hypo, but enough to need to start meds given our plans to conceive. And I'm sad because after an unsuccessful month of trying, the MD wants us to put these plans on hold until my levels stabilize.
The other setback is that my husband developed pneumonia three weeks ago, and now I am recovering from pneumonia as well. Even if I wanted to disobey the endocrinologist, I don't think we could do much baby making right now (which is right around the time we should be making our attempts based on presumptive ovulation based on my cycle). We are both pretty weak.
I look forward to working on our "special project" alongside all of you.
A newbie question:
Given that we're just starting to try, and my cycles are regular--when should you think about charting and temps and whatnot?
Thanks, guys! Nice to meet you!
Re: An Introduction...
Yes! Start charting asap to get you in the habit. Welcome and GL!
From one Katie to another- Welcome! There are suddenly a lot of us here... apparently we're taking over the world (or at least TTGP). Congrats on you and DH quitting smoking, too. I quit 2 1/2 years ago and am so thankful every day that I finally did it!
As far as charting, I'd start right now. You can click on anyone's chart in their siggy to get to Fertility Friend- that's what almost all of us use. I say start now, 'cause it takes a bit for some (me included) to get the hang of it and its the only way you'll know whether or not you're ovulating. Take the tutorials in FF, too. They're super informative.
Others will recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility- its a great book. Even though you're a nurse, I'd be willing to bet that you'll learn a thing or two about your body from it. I studied biology for quite a while and I was floored by how little I understood about my own body! Other than that, I'd say read the Newbie post that is so helpfully pinned at the top of the message board and lurk around a bit.
GL!
Chart! Even with regular cycles, its nice to know what your body is doing and when you actually ovulate.
Good Luck!
And Good job on quiting smoking!!!!

Welcome to the board, and I'm sorry to hear of your recent illness. I'm glad you're on the mend.
I have a pretty normal cycle as well, but I still chart because, like some of the PPs have already said, there is no way to tell exactly when you ovulate without temping. Plus, I like knowing what's going on in there.
Best of luck!
Hi, WELCOME-i'm a nurse too
not ped's though....
First CONGRATULATIONS on quitting--what a HUGE accomplishment... I know how hard that must be for the both of you, but you already knew that...
I would start charting as soon as possible.. I didn't start till this cycle and now wish i had done it all along even though we only started TTC last month. Check our Fertility Friend--it seems to be what just about everyone uses around here.. First few times I went on, it seemed like it was going to be too much but it's easy-promise.
Lastly good luck the the hypothyroid. Hope levels get leveled soon
TTC #2
Welcome! As PP have said, I would start charting right away. I always had regular 28-29 cycles, and then wham - as soon as we started TTC they went to 30+ days and I found out I actually O a little late (around CD 20).
Congrats on quitting smoking and hope you guys are feeling better soon! GL!

Hi! I am also an RN, I work with adults, though.
As others have mentioned, just because your cycles are a good length, it does not ensure ovulation. Sign up for FF and start to chart! I am only on cycle two and have learned so much!
Best of luck to you
