Trying to Get Pregnant

Temperature Question

This is my first cycle charting and I am concerned because my temperature appears to be really low.  This morning it was 96.5.  It hasn't been higher than 97 since I started.  Does anyone just naturally have a really low temperature?

I know sometimes low temperatures is a sign of hypothyroidism.  I was tested for it when I was in high school and went on medication but a few tests in adulthood revealed that my thyroid was actually fine.  So, naturally I'm really worried now that there is something really wrong and this will prevent me from getting pregnant.  (we haven't officially started trying yet)

Any ideas?

Re: Temperature Question

  • It's normal. Your waking temperature is always lower-check out any of our charts in our siggys, or go on Fertility Friend and check some examples

  • When you're at rest and have been for several hours (like during sleep) your body temperature generally is much lower then your normal temperature during the day. I wouldn't be concerned as along as you have no other symptoms. Many girls on here have temps in the 96 range, its just what's normal for them.

As for previous hypothyroidism if you're experiencing symptoms of it I would get checked again, or discuss with your doctor. Untreated hypothyroidism can cause developmental problems in a fetus but you'll need to discuss that with your doctor if he feels your hypothyroidism has returned.

     Good luck!

  • My temps were very low (some below 96.0) until I got my thyroid meds straightened out. Even after, my temps were on the low side until I switched to temping vaginally (vaginal temps tend to be higher than mouth temps).

I don't think it would hurt to have your thyroid levels checked again, but I do urge you to get the actual number, rather than have the doc just say they are normal. Ideally, your thyroid levels should be between 1 and 2 for TTC purposes.

  • Thanks!  I just found a chart for lower temperatures.  I was just concerned because the original chart I printed out to use ended at 97.  I might go to the doctor just to get everything checked out before we start trying.
