Potty Training, Already?

I'm wondering if my kid is ready for potty training.  Well this morning Matthew was saying "caca" and my mom asked him if he had to go caca and he nodded his head, "yes".  She put him on our toilet (first time ever) and he kinda freaked out and didn't go.  10 minutes after she put his diaper back on he went and said it again.

Obviously, he's associating the word with the urge to go and action.  I think 16 months is kinda early, but maybe I should take advantage before I give birth in April to potty train him.

What do you think?  Where do I start?  Should I just buy him a potty?

Re: Potty Training, Already?

  • I don't have any real experience yet.  We have a potty for Andrew when he started showing some interest.  He thinks it's a hat.   He will answer yes if asked if he pooped.  He does knows poo goes in the toilet and loves to flush it.  But I still don't think he's quite ready to train.

I would buy him a potty but I wouldn't push it too much since he freaked out on the big one.  A smaller potty may help with that though.

Maybe start showing him that caca goes in the potty when you change a dirty diaper.  Then you could start putting him on at a certain time every day or if he indicates.

If he's ready, you have plenty of time to train him before April.  But I've heard that older siblings can regress on potty training when the new baby arrives.  So you may want to factor that in.

      Good luck!

  • Evan would do the same at around the same months your little one is at. He is now 2 and he still does the same thing. I bought him one of those potty's that go over the toilet and he knows exactly what it is for but every time I have put him on he freaks out and doesn't go. I would say to just continue putting him on the toilet when he makes the move but in reality I think he may be too young for hard core training. I have also heard about the regression of the toddler when there is a new baby in the house and this tends to happen even if they've been potty trained for a few months. So if it were me, I wouldn't push it too much...if he learns, then great! Good thing is he is still little and has plenty of time to learn. I'm also interested in what other mommies with more experience have to say about this. ;) Good luck!

  • He is showing signs of readyness, but that shouldn't be mistaken for being actually ready to potty train. Get a ring that goes over the toilet and start putting him on it if he asks. Also, start putting him on it at a certain time of day, like before bed or bath, etc. Get him used to sitting on it. He might go, he might not, it won't be consistent yet at his age. See how he does. But i wouldn't start full on potty training until he turns 2.

That's awesome! If he shows interest, why not? (and especially for a boy..that's great!! girls are way easier...natalia was fully potty trained by 2 no pull ups from one day to the next)  Some children will show interest early, then regress. She started to show an interest around 16-18 months...then regressed so I did not push her because it would have had an adverse affect.  Then she just was ready and wore big girl undies.  I would not recommend a potty...just buy the little seat and place it on your toilet so he is used to going on the real deal.  Create some type of reward system, snack/treat he loves, sticker chart, etc.  For you it would be ideal to have him potty trained before the new baby...it is a full time job if you have to "train" him and would be tough with a newborn.  GOOD LUCK MATTHEW (and Mommy) :)

I was also going to write about flushing the caca down the toilet when she did it in her diaper...we did that too when she first started showing interest.
