Flu Shot ...

Mrs. Bones post got me thinking about the flu shot. I have only gotten it once and it made me really sick. I would not normaly worry about it , but I am still taking classes this fall , and I am worried about being around all those people. DH works for a huge company and he always get's sick around this time of year . I feel like I would be a bad parent for not getting it this year since I am pregnant. How many of you are getting the flu shot this year ?

  • Our whole family will be getting the flu shot this year-me DS #1 and DH (who is a physician-so surrounded by germs)!  I def don't want a sick baby this winter.
  • I got one and so did DH. It was the first time either of us got one, but my OB highly recommended it so that I can pass the antibodies on to baby.

  • i never get it- not even last year after having alex.

but seeing that this kid is due in Dec & that my immune system is crap right now- i'll be getting one. so will the hubs & miss alex.

my family gets them every year too.

  • I feel like I should get one, because you can pass on the anti-bodies to the baby. I just remember how sick I was the first time I got it. I def don't want to be that sick again while pregnant.

Same here.  And I've never gotten it for my 8 yr old son so he won't be getting it.

The benefits actually pass on to LO in utero so he's protected when he's born too.  That was kind of a deciding factor for me.

That is what had me thinking I should just get it.

  • I will be getting one again this year, as will DH.

I'm no expert, but the shot shouldn't make anyone sick, it's a dead virus strain. Unless they have a poor reaction to some other ingredient in it, they should just feel tired. If anything, the liklihood is higher with the spray, since that's live. I've also been told it takes a few days to kick in, so you may have already gotten the flu before it took effect. Again, I could be wrong, I'm certainly no MD.

  • Neither of us are getting it. In the 7 years we've been together, neither one of us has gotten the flu. We just don't get sick very often and after some discussion decided not to get it. I've had the pertussis vaccine though and DH will be getting that before LO is born.
  • I won't be getting it. I'm not saying I won't get sick, but I haven't gotten the flu since the 4th grade and very very rarely get sick.

We'll both get it. DH is a PT and surrounded by patients all day long. I work at a college and have students in and out of my office all day long.

That was my main worry. I am on campus two days a week , and a college campus is a very germ filled place.

  • Hubby and I are absolutely getting it. My dad was a physician for 35 years (now retired) and said we would be "doing a great disservice" to our baby by not getting it. My OB said it was a "no brainer" to get it.

The CDC says that the SHOT cannot make you sick because it is a dead virus.  The nasal mist can, but we aren't allowed to get that anyway. It takes up to two weeks for the vaccination to become effective.  I got my shot yesterday and read the little pamphlet, which is why I am a wealth of knowledge right now.  But I must say that I have the body aches right now, and my arm feels like it will fall off.  I NEVER get the flu shot, but my OB advocates for it, and LO is vulnerable during the peak flu season, so I would feel bad not getting it.  H will be getting one, as well as all the grandparents.  The benefits outweigh the negatives on this one, IMO.

  • I already got mine, DS will get his in two weeks and DH will get his through the Army.

DS and I are both sick with the flu now anyways.

  • I got mine last week.  DD will get hers at the allergist, because she has a severe egg allergy.  DH will probably not get one, because he also has a severe egg allergy.  If not for the allergy, they would have all gotten theirs by now!

  • I got it last year for the first time and it made me super sick for 12 hours with the full range of flu-like symptoms. I went ready for more of the same this year and I didn't even have a chill. This shows me once again how different our bodies react to stuff while pregnant. My OB strongly suggests pertussis and flu shots for everyone in contact with the baby.
  • Thanks for all the advice ladies. I have an appt with my doctor today , and I am going to talk to him about it. I think I will just get one to be on the safe side.

  • Already got mine and DH is getting his today.

A simple sinus infection can be catastrophic for baby, so I'm not taking any chances. They gave it to me at my OB office.

  • I already got mine yesterday. I don't usually, but this year is different since LO will be born during flu season.Plus I work with sneezy, sloppy college kids so i was surprised I didn't get the flu last year.

    I doubt DH will.

  • DH gets a flu shot every year because he has asthma, it has never given him any reaction. I've gotten the flu shot almost every year that I've been teaching, and I've never had a problem with it either.

But last year, I caught H1N1 before the shot was available to the general public. It turned in to strep pneumonia, I developed an abcess on my lung and a build-up of fluid in my chest cavity that eventually collapsed my left lung. I was in the hospital for 25 days, during which time I had a thoracotomy (chest surgery) to remove the fluid, because they couldn't get it all with chest tubes.

At the time, I was 29, had just run a half-marathon a few months before, was eating well and taking great care of myself. The doctors said that sometimes even the healthiest people can have severe complications with the flu, especially H1N1.

  • I don't know yet.  I've gotten the flu once in my life and it was the one year I got the flu vaccine.

I was offered the vaccine last week at my Drs. appointment, but it wasn't my regular doc who offered so I declined.  I'm waiting until this week's appointment, when DH will be there as well, to discuss it with my regular doc.

  • I get it every year and got it a couple of weeks ago. My husband never gets it but will do it for the babies this year. They are due during the flu season and it is just not a risk worth taking to me.  My parents and in laws will be doing it as well because they plan to be around the babies allot when they arrive.

This is what is making my decision hard  as well. I have only gotten the flu once , and it was when I got the shot that year. DH usually get's sick every year , but I usually do not get it from him. I have read a few article's that say that your immune  system is weaker when you are PG. I guess I will just talk it over with my doctor today at the appt.

One thing people have to realize is that the flu shot only protects agains whichever flu strains they expect to be most common in a given flu season.  So you can still catch a strain of the flu that wasn't included in the standard flu vaccing.  Just saying...there's not a correlationg between getting the shot and getting the flu, you probably just happened to catch a flu that wasn't included in the vaccine.

This makes perfect sense.  However, the illogical part of my brain is going "NONONONONONONO!  It will make you sick again!"
