party favor help please

DS's 2nd birthday party is this weekend. Last year i had a themed party and went all out, making games, favors and bags, etc.

This year is a construction/dump truck theme. I'm stuck on what to do for favors that isn't plastic MIC crap.  Ideas anyone???

I'm doing a dump truck shaped cake (or a flat cake with a road and a few little vehicles if i get lazy) and vehicle shaped sugar cookies. I think for lunch we are doing PB&J sandwiches and turkey hot dogs, veggies, fruit, cheese, chips. Tables will be decorated with his various truck toys. I'm on the fence about getting balloons (being they are so un-EF).

Any other brilliant ideas that won't set me back too much time/$$...

  • do you think 2 year olds will be able to hit a pinata? i was really considering that, and filling it with little boxes of raisins, snacks, etc.

  • Honestly, why give party favors at all?  I didn't for B's 2nd birthday.  The only thing I had setting out were the paper thingys that they put in their mouths and blow on.  To me, it's all needless in the end, so just save the time and money and just skip the favors all together.  The kids will still have snacks, cake, and ice cream, and I think that's plenty for little ones.

  • Could you do like coloring books from the dollar aisle in target? like small ones...

Ditto.  Maybe a bag of sugar cookie cars to take home - if you are really industrious/want to spend some $ - in reusable snack bags.  Most of the 'favors' that I got as a kid were tossed shortly after the party.

  • yeah, i shot myself in the foot last year by going so over the top that now i feel everyone will be let down...  Last year, i found these awesome animal paper bag puppet craft kits on clearance and each kid got one of those, some pipe cleaner animals, a bag of animal crackers, and some honey bananas. (it was a monkey/zoo theme)

  • How about doing the vehicle shaped cookies as the favors?

Or (and I have zero idea how much these cost new) matchbox cars/trucks?

  • Depending on how much time you have this week, you could make sidewalk chalk (construction themed candy molds would be fun).

Not completely ef or healthy...put a few oreos (or similar...maybe annie's chocolate bunnies?) in a ziploc baggie and let the kids crunch them up - stomping, toy hammers, whatever you can come up with.  Then add a few worms to the bag.  You might want to try several ways of crunching first to determine difficulty and messiness.

  • Little books from the $ spot at target.
  • Honestly, party favors bug the bejeepers out of me.  Most of them are just useless (or annoying) crappy MIC junk that I end up feeling guilty for throwing away.  Edible "favors" would be much appreciated from my standpoint.
