Please help re: bedtime

I am so excited to have just found this board and am hoping you will have some advice.  My daughter is EBF and is 10 months old.

Normally, I nurse her in the living room around 8:30 or 9, she falls asleep, I lay her in her crib and she sleeps until 12 or 1.  I bring her to my bed, nurse her and she'll sleep til 3 or 4, nurse her and then feed her again at 6:30 before going to work.

The past few nights, when I bring her to her crib, she will freak out as soon as I step foot in her room, or as soon as I lay her down, she will sit up, pull herself up and will just scream and scream.  I try to rock her to sleep, she won't calm down and I end up feeding her again around 10 because we're both exhausted and need some sleep.

Any thoughts on why she is doing this or any advice?  Thanks in advance!

  • She could be teething, could be going through a growth spurt, could just need you a little more or be working on a new skill.

There is no magic cure for us with sleep.  Sometimes DS sleeps through the night, others he talks at 3 am and like tonight he wakes up to nurse 4 times.

I can tell you that DS had a few weeks where every time I tried to transfer him from my arms to his crib he freaked out screaming like a crazy man.  I ended up sleeping in the rocking chair with him till 2am most nights.

Just hang in there, this will pass.

  • It sounds like separation anxiety.  You could try holding her for 15-20 minutes after she first falls asleep so she's in a deeper sleep.  Or try bedsharing at bedtime for a week or two.  I would settle DS in my bed and then spend a couple of hours sitting in bed with my laptop next to him.  So I wasn't going to sleep at 8, but I wasn't getting my chores done either.  :-)

  • Does she spend any time in her room other than in her crib?  Maybe she doesn't really like her room because she only associates it with being alone in the dark.  I always did the bedtime feeding in DS's room.  When he was around your LO's age, it seemed he needed a longer bedtime routine to help him settle down.  I started reading a few board books with him in his room before feeding him.  We also got a little MP3 player and put lullabies on it.  There's about 90 minutes worth of music, so it keeps playing after I put him down and he seems to find it relaxing.  He also has a lovey and a paci.

    HTH!
