i knew this day would come... and i knew it would hurt...

... but i had no idea how MUCH it would hurt!  DD bit me for the first time last night while nursing.  Then, she did it 4 more times.  It hurt like a mother f*&%er!

I pulled my nipple out and said "ouch! no! you hurt mommy."  She looked startled and upset, but it didn't keep her from biting again a few minutes later.

Does anyone have a method that has worked?

  • DS started biting right when his bottom teeth came in. I said "NO" in a stern voice and it scared him a little. This happened 4 times. Now that he has 4 teeth, I was expecting him to start again, but thankfully he hasn't!

Sorry I don't really have any advice for you, but I feel your pain!

  • I try not to react in an abrupt way.  I unlatch him and calmly say, "please don't bite mommy.  biting hurts mommy" then he relatches.  If he does it again, I do the same thing again but this time I put him on the floor and tell him that biting hurts me.  I tell him that "biting hurts and mommy can't give milky if he hurts me"  sometimes he gets upset other he just comes right back to nurse.

The key is starting over in a positive way and not reacting.  Your LO may like your reaction.

I notice DS biting more when he is teething, If you really focus on the latch you'll be able to feel his tongue move.

  • Sometimes I feel like it's a accident and sometimes it's boredom/playing. I usually let out a screech which will frighten him, if I see he's just feeling mischievous, prevention  is the best measure I just take him right off and say "no. gentle"  "gentle" is a word we've been trying to teach early on. With pulling on the cats, pulling on my hair, etc. I'm hoping he's learning, but with 7 teeth  it's going  to happen

  • I unlatched DS and put him on the floor. After two days he realized that biting mommy = no more milk.

This.  It's the worst while he's teething.  Then it takes him a few days to get used to the way the new teeth feel, then it's usually fine.  Also, I try to get him off as he's finishing up so he doesn't do it just because he's done eating or bored
