Got the call from the nurse I was dreading last night and I'm waiting on the diabetic counselor to call me to schedule an appointment. I didn't have GD my first pregnancy so it's a little new to me. Should I just eat Atkins-style in the meantime? I've done some googling, but I just feel daunted and overwhelmed at the moment. I'm not much of a breakfast eater (yes I know this is terrible) but I believe I'm supposed to eat it now? I need this appointment to happen ASAP!
Re: Those w/ GD, what to eat - waiting for appt. with diabetic counselor
Just lurking; however, I was also just diagnosed with GD. I was put on insulin, but also follow a GD diet. What they have for my diet is:
Breakfast: Total of 30-45 grams carb, Snack: 30, Lunch: 30-45, Snack: 30, Dinner: 30-45. Proteins and (most) vegi's are free. Also I am going sugar free with most everything else.
I?m sure each women is a little different?Good Luck!
I don't have GD this time around but had it with DS. The obvious is to stay away from carbs (sugar and bread products are the big ones). Whole grain, brown breads are usually okay in small portions - a portion is generally the size of your palm. Unfortunately, fruit will also raise your blood sugar so only eat fresh fruit in small portions (half an apple at a meal instead of a whole apple, etc). Fruit juices (even fresh) will likely cause your sugar to spike because they lack the fiber content of fresh fruit so you'll probably have to steer clear of them. Even though it's natural, honey will spike your blood sugar too. If you need to add sweetener to anything, Splenda was the recommendation when I had GD. It may take some trial and error to figure out exactly what makes your blood sugar rise.
Protein options are always good... You DEFINITELY can't skip meals, especially breakfast. I'm having a hard time remembering what I ate for breakfast with GD but I'm thinking eggs should be okay. ??
Good luck and hang in there!
I'm on a similar plan as the PP's. Yes you will definitely need to start eating breakfast - I was told you should eat the least amount of carbs at breakfast. You don't necessarily want to eat Atkins style though - your body still needs the carbs - you just need to eat them spaced out throughout the day and preferably the good kind (whole grains, veggies, fruits) rather than frosted cake. It's important to eat the snacks too - don't skip snacks or meals.
For me 1 carb = 15 g total carbs (not the Sugar, the total carb count is what's important)
Bfast - 1 carb
Snack - 1-2 carb
Lunch 2-3 carb
Snack - 1-2 carb
Dinner - 3 carb
Snack - 1-2 carb

You will most definitely be considered high risk from this point forward and the size of your baby will be measured constantly. Don't be afraid though! If you're vigilant and stick to your diet, GD is totally manageable. DS was born (vaginally) on his exact due date, healthy, and was a very normal 6 lbs 11 oz. It won't last forever!
the counselor will ask you a bunch of questions and create a diet specific to you. mine is more strict this time around than w/ ds.
for breakfast i usually eat oatmeal, an egg sandwich of some kind, or eggs w/ whole wheat toast. i was eating a whole wheat english muffin w/ peanut buttter, but the pb makes my sugar jump even though it shouldn't so I quit.
lunch today is tuna w/ provolone and salad mix on a bagel thin. sometimes it's on an english muffin. this works really well for me. yesterday was left over chicken chili. no fast food. usually a salad or some high protein mini meal.
dinner is easier. a protein, a veggie, a limited starch. pretty much no pasta i've learned even when whole grain and w/in my limits. (this is also different than last time.) last night was leftover steak on a salad and a carb control yogurt. the rest of the family had bbq.
snacks - 1 15 g snack 3x a day is what i was given. i can't have the one after dinner. it throws off my fasting numbers. snacks are usually a piece of cheese w/ some fruit, cottage cheese and peaches, nuts, mini luna bars, breyers carb control ice cream bar...
i found dark chocolate and cinnamon roasted almonds at the grocery and they're super yummy for a snack. i like to mix the 2 together.
the mini luna bars i also just found. they're only a few bites, but satisfy my chocolate craving and keep me full long enough for the next meal time.
crystal light doesn't have any carbs so that's great when you get sick of water. i do unsweet tea if we eat out. Ruby Tuesday's is a good go too for eating out w/ the salad bar. last time we were there i had a florentine chicken breast w/ asparagus and their mashed potatoes. it worked really well.
you will want to eat breakfast and your other meals & snacks. you'll need it to keep your blood sugar consistent. if i sleep in even 1.5 hrs it really messes me up.
