2nd Trimester

I feel guilty for taking medicine

Two doctors and my midwife have all told me to take medicine for my allergies and seasonal asthma.  I don't usually have such a problem with it, and I've never taken medicine for it before.  This year, I've been pretty sick for over a month.  Now I'm taking allergy medicine and an inhaler (both category B), and I know it's best for me to not be choking and coughing, but I can't stop feeling badly for giving my baby drugs.

  • Get over it. If two dr's and a midwife say it's fine, then it's fine.

  • Will you feel bad for medicating your baby once it's outside? Sometimes you just need medicine.

I concur. I had my OBGYN tell me that I needed to take an inhaler if I had any problems breathing due to allergies or asthma. Without it not only do you not get enough oxygen but neither does the baby.

  • It totally sucks to have to take meds, but if it makes you feel better then it's a good thing for both of you in the long run.  The healthies babies are born to healthy moms, right....and if taking medicine will help you be be more healthy and less sick, well then you're doing your litte one a favor.  Take your meds!

And for the record, I can totally feel your pain.  I have to take meds for crohns and while I wish I didn't have to take meds to feel normal, I've come to terms with it and understand its best for me and LO.  Hope you can get to that point too.

  • This is all what I need to hear.  I tell myself these things, but it makes me feel better to hear it from other pregnant mommas. Thanks :)

  • I'm totally with you. Severe asthma runs in my family but i've never had a problem till pregnancy..

the inhaler doesn't bother me so much because idk how much of that actually gets to the baby. but i take allergy medicine more religiously now than my prenatals. . . .

sigh... i guess there's no choice. mama's gotta breath ya? but it still sucks.
