Daycare "curriculum"

What does your LO's daycare teach them?  DD goes only twice a week and each day I get a report of what she did and every single time it says they did shapes.  Never letters or numbers.  I asked about it and they said at her age (just under 2) they work on colors and shapes then letters and numbers when they are a little older.  Is this normal?  I thought they did it all at the same time.  Like a certain letter or number or shape on a particular day..

Re: Daycare "curriculum"

  • At this age I would think they need to work on things for a while before they catch on since she's only there two times a week.  If you're wondering, I would just ask when you pick her up one day what they are working on so that you can work on teh same things on the 'off' days to help her progress.  Then maybe ask what other things they'll work on throughout the year....see if they move on to other things.

  • I don't know if this is typical, but our daycare does a letter, number, shape, and color every day, along with Bible stories. Again, I don't know if this is typical of most daycares, but I love that she does "learns" about it. I am a teacher, and I know that exposing kids, no matter what ability level and age, to these sorts of things frequently, will help them big time when they get to preschool and kindergarten.

  • As a previous daycare teacher I will tell you that in my experience we never "focused" on letters until at least 3.  Yes of course you went over them, sang ABC's, but I think "just under 2" is a bit young to focus soley on them just yet.

With that said, do they not give you a copy of the planned curriculum so you can be aware of what the current and upcoming focuses are?

This. We didn't begin focusing on any single letters or numbers until 3 at our DC. There is really no reason to. To me, the best way to get a kid interested in reading is to demonstrate it firsthand. But a letter/number a week wouldn't be that huge of a deal. My main concern would be if they were doing a huge amount of art activities and allowing the LOs to build their ffine motor skills so they will be able to write a little later.

Songs, Big Books, hands-on art, and manipulatives are what I would want to see. To learn all of the shapes and colors isn't going to happen in a week. Unless you really don't see them doing much or they're saying the same thing every day just to cover their butts, I would say they're okay.

  • No reason a 1-2 year old needs to be "working" on letters in "school" - I think "played all day" would be an adequate report.
  • Learning through play, fine and gross motor skills and socialization should be your concern at this point.  Skills such as feeding themselves with utensils, drinking from cups, learning to sit on a chair, learning how to point out body parts, interacting with other children etc are what they should be learning at this point.

Don't get caught in the "my baby can read" hysteria.  They'll learn numbers and letters in due time.

    Yes

Is your LO coming home w/ more knowledge, more confidence, more skills or is he staying the same?

There is never a day that that DD's daycare sheet said "learned buses" or "learned to count" but yesterday - she pointed out 2 buses to me.  She can also tell me about the weather, knows big and small, etc.  She's learning stuff every day - from me, from daycare, from the world.
