Nutramigen/Alimentum Mommies, Please come in...

Hi all,

Major lurker here.  But my question is for those mommas who have their LO's on either Nutramigen or Alimentum.

Right now I'm EBF, but DS has had mucousy stools for months now, even though I have been dairy/soy free.  He also has AR, too.  Anyway, I am  a nurse and will be going back to work in a couple months, 12+hr shifts and so pumping will be virtually impossible.  I want to start to wean now to formula slowly so that by the time I go back, he's comfortably on formula for days.

My GI pedi recommended either formula, but I have read some reviews about nasty taste/smell/refusal, etc.

What have your experiences been?  How did you get LO to accept?

TIA

  • my little lady is on nutramigen and while it solved some of the colic issues, it SMELLS AWFUL!  Her spit up is toxic and her poops are nuclear toxic disasters.   It did take a solid week of getting her to take it- maybe you can mix 1/2 Breast Milk and 1/2 formula and increase the ratio until she takes it.

Also- check with your insuance company to see if they cover the cost of it if your Dr. writes an Rx for it.

  • Ds was put on Alimentum by the pedi at 3 weeks.  It does have a nasty smell.  Then we went to a GI and he put him on Elcare(no soy, no milk) DS actually did better on the Elecare. At 7 weeks we tried soy formula because we had a free sample of it, and the Elecare was getting too expensive and insurance did not cover it.  He did well on the soy, so we tried the Alimentum because we had so many cans of it.  DS screamed and cried all day long again.  We switched back to the soy and within 24 hours he was not as irritable and he did not scream. GL!

  • DS is on Nutramigen. The formula does smell but I've gotten used to it.  His spit-up and poops are particularly nasty. We had no problems with him refusing it though and he was exclusively breastfed for 9 weeks before we made the switch.

  • Ds is 12 wks, and is my third child on Nutramigen. My oldest is anaphylactic to milk, and allergic to soy, dairy, egg, peanut. Because of the severity of his reactions, and is also contact reactive--we had no choice but to keep them all on nutramigen. It is smelly, but not unbearable. Their poops were not terrible. These guys have never had a problem with not taking it. It does help, and worth the money. Good luck!
  • DS was put on Alimentum at 2 months old while I pumped and dumped because of his newly discovered milk allergy. He took it fine the first try and was on it for 3 days straight. I am back to BF, but he still gets maybe 3 bottles of Alimentum per week (he is 3 1/2 months). He will switch to the formula except for me nrusing him morning and night when I go back to work in a few months. It smells gross, but he has had no problems switching btw the formula and breast milk. Good luck.
  • MY DS was on Alimentum from about 3 weeks old, to a little over 3 months.  We ended up introducing a bottle at a time, he'd been drinking expressed BM, so the bottle wasn't a challenge.  He HATED the powder, so we tried the liquid, and he loved it.  Then after a few days, we mixed the Liquid with the powder, 1 ounce at a time, increasing an ounce every feeding.  We had him on the powder within 2 days.

We've had to do this whenever switching formulas. DS is very picky about his food! He's now been switched to soy.

It does smell like potatoes, and for your sake, rinse out the bottles immediately after DS finishes it.  The smell of leftover formula was enough to gag me!!
