Ikea Expedit Bookshelf

This question is for anyone who owns the Ikea Expedit Bookshelf.  We purchased it in white for the nursery and first of all, it's absolutely adorable!  My only problem I have is that when it's horizontal, you can see the silver screws on the sides.

Does anyone else have this problem?  How are you planning to hide the screws?  Or does anyone have a recommendation for how to cover up the silver screws?  I would have thought they would have given plastic covers for them but they didn't.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :)

Re: Ikea Expedit Bookshelf

  • I have the white one horizontal as well. I'm just going to pick up a white paint pen from Michaels and use that to hide the silver. And really, you could use any paint that works for metal, but the paint pens are really easy (they have a large felt tip, and you don't need a brush).

  • Such a simple yet brilliant idea!  I was worried about plastic coverings in case they ever came off and became a choking hazzard.  I never thought to paint them....Thank you for the suggestion! :)

  • Don't have any tips on covering the screws but wanted to say if you are looking for bins the Target ITSO brand half and full size fabric bins fit the expedit perfectly and come in lots of different colors.  I found the Ikea bins didnt come in colors I was interested in.  And the Closetmaid fabric bins are a bit too small.
  • I have one of these I'm planning on putting in the nursery. I was looking at it the other day, and wondered if it would make a decent changing table (ie just put a contoured changing pad on top). What do you think? They are over 30" wide so width wouldn't be a problem. It might be a little low in height but seemed doable. I just need a way to get the changing pad to not slip around, but people have suggestions for that (I've seen lots of threads about using tops of standard dressors)...

  • What a drag!  We have the black-brown and ours actually came with painted screws that match the wood color.  I would second the paint idea in that case.  I think the assumption about the plastic screws possibly being a choking hazard is correct.  I know it has been discussed as it relates to cribs before.

We've had ours for a long time now (not in the nursery) and actually don't even touch it that much but over time (and with any movement) actually seems to "loosen" a bit.  So, maybe just remember to tighten the screws occasionally to help maintain the stability.  For this reason, I'm not sure I would use it as a changer, but I have seen it done before.  Just keep an eye on the stability.

I was thinking the same thing and was wondering if it would be tall enough for a changing table.

  • Sorry double post...

We got legs for it at Ikea that were supposed to be used for another table.  It lifted it up high enough that it is a good height for a changing table.  I don't remember what the legs were called, but I do know they had one of the Expedits on display in the store with the legs.

We got the birch color and I have been trying to figure out for the past few months how to cover up the screws on the side.  I don't think paint will work with the birch color, not sure what we'll end up doing!

ETA: Here's a link to legs - I think these are the ones we got: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80143217 (sry can't make it linky since I am on my Macbook using Safari)

We also have the dark wood one and the screws don't show.  That's weird that they left the covers out of the white ones?  But yeah, I guess they would be a choking hazard... hadn't thought of that.  Oh, and I agree with the pp- it's too short for a changing table on its own but I've seen it with the legs and that would probably work.
