May 2011 Moms

Is it weird....maternity clothes?

I'm 9 weeks today (YAY!) and I don't really feel like I need maternity clothes yet. I feel like I'm getting a bit bigger (mostly because I hardly ever workout anymore).  I feel like a lot of the May Momma's are already in maternity clothes!

Re: Is it weird....maternity clothes?

  • Most of my friends weren't in maternity clothes until 16 weeks.  I hear that you start showing faster with your second child so maybe that is why...

  • I don't actually need them yet, but I bought 2 pairs of pants and 2 tops for $25 just to get started.

    The pants are pretty comfortable.

  • I am wearing all of my normal clothes. The only time I have brought out anything maternity wear related is when I am bloated and my jeans feel a little tight. But that's really only at night. Everything else fits fine still. Could be the 4 pounds I've lost though.

  • This is my second go around so my body is expanding a little faster this time.
  • I'm in maternity pants because I tended to wear form fitting clothes prior to my BFP.  With the bloating I had a an unattractive profile and I felt miserable. I prefer to be comfortable, beautiful, and happy rather than worried about where I *should* be at.

  • With my first, I didn't wear maternity clothing until about 16-20 weeks. I am a small gal and just got some things in a larger size. this time, I feel like my body is changing much faster. I had my pants unbottoned today, HA! I really think everyone and every pg is differnent. Wear whatever you are comfortable in.

  • I had weight loss surgery in January and have lost 124 lbs so I am staying out of maternity clothes as long as possible.  All of my old maternity clothes are long gone because they'd be too big for me even if I wanted to wear them. lol
  • I did go shopping for some basics - I have no trouble with my own tops, but bottoms (jeans) were starting to get painful, esp. by dinner time/when out with friends and I'd have to unbutton.  I caved and bought a pair of motherhood "self belly" jeans...and I LOVE them. They don't have the belly band - those that did were way to big still.... These are just elastic where your belt would go and have no zipper. I was trying to work with the bella band, but was more annoyed by it than anything. These jeans are so much better.

  • I just purchased a couple of pairs of pants on OldNavy.com that they advertised being appropriate for the first trimester.  I'm fine in my old pants in the morning but as the day goes on I'm so bloated with fluids and gas I just get so darn uncomfortable!

This. I am expecting to be in maternity clothes by 9 weeks or so, when it was at least 16 weeks, if not later, that I went into maternity before.

  • A lot of May Mamas are already in maternity clothes at 8-10 weeks because of bloat... it' really how you wear your clothes (are they loose, or painted on) and what you feel comfortable in. I've not gained any weight (lost a pound) and have water on me for sure, but I am still in my regular clothes.  Just feel good!
  • With my first child I wore maternity pants the last 2 weeks of pregnancy. But with my second child I didnt get into maternity clothes. I wore the same size through out the pregnancy. Im still wearing my normal jeans and shorts.

But its what ever makes YOU comfortable.

I dont like the way maternity jeans go up so high. I wear all my jeans and shorts below my waist. So it doesn't feel right when the jeans go above my comfort limit. As for shirts I just bought 2 packs of white t v-necks to be comfortable. I save my "regular shirts" only for going out of the house. And I have like 15 pairs of basketball shorts. Hope this helps.

  • I considered going ahead and getting a band yesterday while running errands, but...the only thing I'd need it with so far is jeans, and it's been too hot to wear those lately.  Otherwise, my "warm weather" style tends more toward long flowy skirts and the like, which tend to have either elastic or drawstring waists...and I've got a pair of black "lounge pants" that are knit, with a similar style waist, that I can wear outside the house without raising comment.  If I were still working full-time outside the home, I'd probably have to go clothes-shopping again soon, but since we moved out-of-state and I got my freelance gig, I haven't really had much work.

Amusingly,  with the way my body's usually shaped, the current level of bloat would probably let me wear more "normal" jeans and such--I usually have largish thighs and my butt pokes out, but my waist is typically much narrower...which typically leads to most jeans and pants either being too tight on the wider areas, or much too big at the waist.

  • I didn't wear maternity clothes until I was 6.5 months pregnant with my first. I didn't look pregnant until then. I am expecting to be in maternity much earlier this time...and I am kinda hoping I am. Everyone is different.

  • I am in maternity pants because they are more comfortable.  I am so bloated and I look 4-5 months pregnant already.  This is my 4th though...
