Trying to Get Pregnant

Do you tip..?(NTTGPR)

How do you all feel about tipping when you order something to-go from a place like Chilis, Outback, etc? (basically a restaurant where you would tip if you ate in the dining area)

  • I tip just not as much as I would if I were dining in.

  • I didn't until a good friend started working there. Their pay is based on the assumption they will get tips. The restaurant will take tips from other servers to get them up to minimum wage though.

  • Typically the hostess takes the order at a restaurant like Chilis, Outback, etc... and I will tip her few dollars.

  • I see it like this: they still run your food out to you. So yes.

I knew a girl that was the food runner for Chili's To-Go. On the night's she was scheduled for that, that's all she did all night long unless the kitchen and prep needed her.

    Ditto this.

eta: I had a brief stint as a waitress back in college, and even though I was not actually "serving" to-go patrons, it still took time to take the order, package it, and ring it up.  I personally never expected a tip for to-go orders, but it was a nice bonus when I got them.

  • I tip at LEAST 10 percent of the cost of my order. 15% if they have been exceptionally nice/ timely.

I work in the restaurant industry. The people who handle your to go's take your order, ring it in, hassle the kitchen guys to get it out on time and make sure it's hot, pack it all up so that it will stay as hot as possible and wont spill in your car (this actually takes a lot of effort especially if you have a huge order). Many places will even take your food out to your car for you so you never have to get out.

And yes, tips are pretty much the only $ they make out of it. When in doubt, always tip. Especially if someone was nice to you, tipping nice people who work for tips keeps them nice.

  • I still tip based on how friendly they were. I think someone who does their job well and with a smile deserves a great tip!

This. I know it's part of their base pay wages so I do tip them, just not as much as a regular waiter.

  • I always tip 10% on to go.  I was actually a hostess at Chili's & a server at the Cooker Bar & Grill and a bars called Charlie Brown's & Two Keys Tavern so I always tip. I've been in (& out) of the rest. business since HS so I really tip well unless the service is really bad (I've only had it happen once & I actually explained why to the server).

  • 2-3 dollars same as delivery. I used to work in a restaurant and ALWAYS tip 20% to servers no matter how crappy the service because I know they make pennies an hour and that job is hard work. But the to-go drive up person got paid min wage so tips were extra on that.

THis actually depends on what state you are in.  This was the case in OH, where your wage is lower expecting you will make up the rest in tips.  (like $2.32 vs. $5.15 when I was there).  Out here in Washington... it is state law that you get paid minimum wage same as everyone else.  So if I get really crummy service out here... no tip! (has to be really bad... only happened once so far with a HS girl who was more interested in her phone than her customers)  They are making nearly $8 an hour no matter what

  • I tip but not as much as at a sit down restaurant. I worked as a server in college and sometimes got the carry out window. It is still hectic as you have to gather all of the items and ring up the bill and you might still be taking other orders by phone or taking care of other tables even.

  • I don't tip in instances like that. To me, that's like tipping the person who takes your order at McDonald's.

EDIT: Wow, I guess I'm the minority here after reading the rest of the responses!

  • I tip the same as if I am dining in.  I worked at Outback for a couple of years in college and the to go people make the same as the other servers.  Plus, there were like 10 of them on during the weekends and they would all have to split the tips.
