Our DD Ava was born via emergency c-section so Chad and I decided to just go
ahead and do a repeat c-section for this baby. All in all I'm glad we did it
that way. It was a fairly relaxed experience since we knew exactly what to
expect for the most part.
We called the hospital at 6:30 am on Monday October 6th to see when
they wanted us to come in. They said to get there by 8 am so we called
Chad's mom, who was going to stay with Ava to let her know. We planned
on leaving the house at 7:15 to give us plenty of time with traffic. We
got to the hospital at 7:45 and were put into a room. We sat there for
awhile and then our nurse Kat came in. She told us that a woman had
just come in who had broken her water and was having a repeat c-section
so we were going to go in after her. We put on the tv and just hung out
in the room until 11 am when they put me on the monitors and started my
IV. It took a couple of tries to get the IV in. I have a big bruise on
my right wrist where they tried but then she had better luck with my
left wrist. After getting some fluids and being on the monitor for
awhile they told Chad to get his scrubs on and it was time to go into
the OR, this was at 11:20. I walked into the OR and Chad had to wait
outside while they put in the spinal. This is where it got bad... They
decided to do a re-fillable spinal on me rather than the normal one
that just lasts the 2-4 hours. The anesthesiologist tried a bunch of
times to get it in and it kept hitting nerves and I was having shooting
nerve pain down my legs. I was holding as still as possible and leaning
on Kat. I started to cry, I was so nervous that it was going to hurt.
It seriously took at least 20 minutes and then he decided to just do
the regular spinal. I was sobbing at this point and had yelped in pain
a bunch of times. Meanwhile, Chad is outside wondering what is going
on, what is taking so long, and why I'm crying out in pain. Finally the
regular spinal went smoothly and took right away. I was so worked up at
this point though that I couldn't calm down. They gave me oxygen and
got me prepped the rest of the way. I was worried the whole time that
the spinal wasn't going to work and I was going to feel the surgery. I
have two little cuts on my right shin that I think they made while
trying to make sure wasn't feeling anything. I just remember the
anesthesiologist asking me if I could feel 'this' or if I felt 'that'
and then them saying that I was ready for them to start when I said
that I couldn't feel it. Chad just kept trying to reassure me that
everything was going fine and there was nothing to worry about. Colby
Richard was born at 12:37pm and they held him up over the curtain so
that I could see him right away. He was all covered still and I
remember that something dripped over but I didn't care because he was
crying and looked so perfect! Chad went over while they cleaned him off
and took his first picture at 12:41pm, only minutes old. He also made a
video of them weighing him. He was 6lb 14oz and they have his length at
18 inches, but he was more like 19.5 inches as that is what his length
was at his first Dr's appointment yesterday. Everything went fairly
smoothly with him from the start. He took to breastfeeding right away
and that is still going really well. I,
on the other hand, have had a completely different experience than the
last time. I ended up with a Spinal Headache from my spinal anesthesia.
Basically what happens is that since they made so many attempts to get
it in, one of the holes that they made didn't heal quickly and was
leaking spinal fluid. It was hard to tell at first what the headache
was from but the anesthesiologist
came in and talked to me, asking me where it was and if it was
positional. While I was lying flat on my back I felt almost perfect, as
soon as I would stand I was in horrible pain. By Wednesday I was still
having a rough time and they talked to me about doing a Blood Patch
where they take blood from my arm and insert it into the hole using a
fluoroscope (to find the hole) and that seals it so the fluid stops
draining. That didn't sound like fun to me at all! I was also offered a
heavy duty caffeine/narcotic/tylenol blend pill to try on Thursday
morning and I went with that. It worked great well and I didn't have to
do the blood patch.I have a lot more bruising than I did with my first
c-section but I guess that the second surgery is much more involved and
that this is common. My incision is healing really well. I've also
already lost a bunch of the weight and am only about 10lb from where I
started (not that anything will fit for months, but at least its
something!). Chad and I got everything ready
and went home around 4:30pm. We took all of our stuff home and then
went and got Ava from Chad's parents house, that went really smoothly
because when we got home we didn't then have to get everything into the
house too, just the four of us. I highly recommend doing that if you
have two children. Sorry this got so long! I'll add in some pictures too...
