Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone else trying to give up soda/pop?

I am trying my hardest to give up pop (or soda-whichever you call it) and it sucks.  I am mostly doing it because to the bloat factor but I am also trying to get away from caffeine.  I haven't had too many headaches but when I get them, they really beat the crap out of me.  I have a headache now.

I am down to just sips of my husbands pop now.  Its been weeks since I had a full can.

My weakness is Pepsi- what is yours?  How long have you gone without?

Re: Anyone else trying to give up soda/pop?

  • I love Diet Coke. Real soda - yuck!

BUT, artificial sweeteners are not good for you, either.

I don't buy it, but I do drink a can with lunch at work 3x's/week.

  • I have been trying, or to at least keep it to a minimum. I'm just trying to be healthy, and that is one of the things that I can do.

I sitll have one every once in a while.

Dr. Pepper or Cherry/Vanilla coke is my weakness.

  • I've tried repeatedly to give up Diet Coke.  At this point I've been successful in giving up Diet Coke... only to start drinking Coke Zero.  Ha.

The only thing I have tried that's been somewhat helpful is drinking sparkling water.  It's fizzy and has some flavor, so it's a decent substitute for soda.  Trader Joe's sells nice big bottles for cheap, or you can buy packs of LaCroix water at various grocery stores.

    Good luck!

  • I am also trying to cut it out for the most part.  I'm basically caffiene free at this point.   I weaned myself off awhile ago.  I do enjoy the occasional caffinated drink... I just avoid any consistent consumption.  I also wanted to cut out the artifical sweeteners... so I occaionally get regualr ginger ale (one of my favs)... caffienate weakness would be Dr. Pepper, though :)

  • Diet coke is my weakness too. I buy my organic veggies and free range meat and wash it down with some tasty chemicals. I've cut down to about 3 a week, with the intent of probably eliminating it down the road entirely, after I see pink.

  • I think the reason they say artificial sweeteners are not good is because they make you crave real sugar and ppl usually go on a binge.  I used to have 1 or 2 pepsi's a day but now I have one glass of tea, no sugar or sweeteners.  It has helped calm the other sugar cravings too.  I know tea is caffienated but I am taking babysteps :)

  • I've been trying to cut back.  Regular Coke is my downfall - sometimes I don't want anything else in the world.

I'm trying to drink more water - I mix in the little packets of Propel or Crytal Light Pure, which helps.

  • I gave it up also.  I've started buying those big bottles of water and that's helped during the day when I feel like I should be drinking soda.  Sometimes I'll put the crystal light packets in them.  I do allow myself a soda once or twice a week, but you're right I feel a lot better since I've stopped.  A lot more healthy.  Good Luck and just remember it's for a good reason!
  • I'm giving up most caffeine as well as alcohol (I wasn't a big drinker before anyways) since we've started TTC. It's a personal choice, I guess I just see it as one thing I can control right now Stick out tongue I don't miss the soda so much, but definitely my coffee! I had major headaches without the caffeine at first, but now I'm used to decaf so no problems!

  • I gave up Diet coke when we first started TTC but lately I have been drinking it by the 2 liter. Bad I know.

I envy those who eat organic and healthy like that.  I do my best but it is difficult learning about it and finding new foods.  I was raised with a lot of processed food (tater tots, mac & cheese, pizza, etc) and I am trying to break bad habits.

I won't lie, it's expensive, and it requires cooking at least 5-6 times a week (counting lunches on weekends), but I really think it's making a difference in our health.

However, today I am really craving some buffalo wings. Sigh.

I think if you look at the cost of processed food/fast food/etc per ounce it is prob. very comparable.  It is the cooking and prep time that hinders me.

  • I used to be a Diet Coke maniac.  But I cut out all artificial sweeteners about a year ago.  A friend of mine who is a Science major told me that it screws with your body's ability to break down sugars and promotes fat stores.

Since TTC I've pretty much cut out sodas with caffeine -- and after I ditched Diet Coke, regular Pepsi became my weakness...  Now I'll only have a few prior to ovulation.

My substitute now is Fanta.  I love their cream soda and grape soda.  So if I feel like something fizzy, I usually have those because they are caffeine free, or I'll have a gingerale.

  • I did it a few months ago and it was hard.  If I really want a soda though I will have one (well half because now I cannot drink the whole thing).  We just don't buy it at home and therefore I don't really drink it much.  The headaches will pass....Good luck
  • I have a can of Diet Mt. Dew every day.  I've tried so many times to kick it, but the headaches are horrendous!!

  • I have a serious Pepsi addiction.  I decided to wean myself off of it by  buying caffeine free Pepsi.  I started by replacing one regular Pepsi a day with a caffeine free, then I replaced two, and so on.  I'm now drinking caffeine free Pepsi only.  It took me about two weeks and a few mild headaches, but I'm so glad I got it over with.   My next step will be to wean myself off of soda altogether so I can control my sugar intake.

  • I am a coke junkie here!!!! and that is the hardest giving it up.  I don't smoke or drink coffee so it my one vice..... I am down to one cup a day (not bad considering I work across from a subway with free refills).  I found that switching to sprite or ginger ale works.  Not quite as good but it helps with the fizz factor.

  • I very rarely have any pop in the first place, so I'm not too concerned. But on occasion I do get the craving (and I don't mean that I just want a little-I HAVE to have it!) for regular Mt. Dew. Probably the worst pop in the world I know, but I still have to have it about once a month. Other than that I have all non-caffinated drinks with natural sugar in them. I also have raspberry ginger ale when my stomach screws up because I can't stand the taste of plain.

  • I live for Pepsi. When I started charting this cycle, I quit cold-turkey, pledging to cut out all bad things while TTC as if I were already pregnant. That lasted until somewhere around CD30ish... currently on CD 65. I realized that Pepsi and wine have become necessities on rough days of this endless cycle.
  • Dr Pepper!  I went without for 6-wks.  It's hard because I have chronic daily migraines anyway, so the withdrawal headaches about killed me.

  • I haven't had a "cola" (coke, pepsi, dr pepper) since 2007.  I have an immune blood disorder and when I was on prednisone it really messed up my sugars and I just can't stand them now.  I will have the occasional fountain sprite with lots of ice or ginger ale.

  • At the height of my Coca-cola(preference)/Pepsi addiction, I was drinking 3 cans a day. I love the stuff.  Diet Coke/Pepsi makes me nauseous.

After giving it up for about a year, I lost 10 pounds!   I especially miss it with Italian meals. I do have it occasionally though.

I have found that Diet Sierra Mist is a decent alternative.  In the summer, I try to drink water with some lemon.

I believe soda is referred to as "Liquid Satan" in the Skinny B*tch book.  LOL.

GL! I know it is hard.
