Trying to Get Pregnant

Newbie Question

Ok, so this is my first post and sorry if its a dumb question.  Embarrassed But I don't want to alert any of my friends that we may be trying by asking them questions. So it is my first month off of BC. I used an OPK just to see if I would be ovulating and used it wrong (I mis-calculated the length of my cycle).  But we still had fun regardless of all negatives when I did use the kit. Now, my period has not arrived. I have taken a pregnancy test that came up negative. I don't think I'm pregnant but will test again tomorrow.

My question is: I have heard some women never get their normal cycles back, so when do you start trying to predict ovulation again?

Most of what I have read is that it can take your body about 3 months to get the cycles started, but some women have become pregnant before the 3 months. Is there a science to figuring it out that I haven't read.

Again I apologize for the dumb question, hopefully its just newbie paranoia.

Re: Newbie Question

  • I usually start taking OPKs on CD10. I usually take them a week before I get my first positive, but I don't want to take any chances! Good luck!

  • It can take some women up to a year to regulate after coming off BCP. Good news is though, you don't have to predict ovulation! If you start taking your temp and charting it every morning you can pin-point ovulation. OPK's can tell you when you're having a surge and about to O, but they can't confirm O. Visit FertilityFriend.com and sign up for free, through any of our tickers. They have tons of great tutorials...I'd highly recommend it.

  • First off, please pick up a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility, it will help A LOT.

Second, you will needto take numerous OPK's to determine your surge. One will not get you what you are looking for.

Click on my ticker and go to Fertility Friend.COM and take the tutorials. Start tempting and let us know how it goes.

PS. It should not take 3 cycles to get your cycles started. However it might take 3 or more cycles for you to become regular again.

I hope this helps. Normally  I would've said things a lot less positive, but I don't have the energy today and I am in a decent mood Stick out tongue

  • Welcome to TTGP!

At first when you get off of BCP, it can mess up your cycles. I quit BCP 9 months ago and had cycles ranging from 29 to 39 days. To know if you ovulate, I would suggest that you start charting your temperatures, only that confirms ovulation for sure. The OPK's can be fakeouts, even if you do get positive ones. You can sign up for free on www.fertilityfriend.com or by clicking on my ticker. They offer tutorials as well, so you know what to do. It might be overwhelming at first, but you'll get the hang of it quickly. The unwritten rule is to call your doctor if you didn't get AF after 60 days. Until then I would take a HPT every week or so.

Please also read the newbie link in my siggy!

    Good luck!

  • OPKs are great...however you have to use them pretty regularly to get your surge.  I highly suggest reading a book like TCOYF or What to Expect before Your Expecting.  Both are really helpful.

I just started temping-however...I usurally pay attention to things like CM & OPKs to determine my surge since I work a crazy work schedule. I discovered just the later 2 were very accurate in predicting my O date. I have been doing that for 6 cycles prior to temping. As far as BC my doctor told me it is out of your system after 3 months. Not sure how long it will take you to get normal cycles since I don't have them.  GL!

This, and I hope your stay is short and sweet
  • Everyone is different. There's no way to know if/when you'll get your "normal" cycles back. The box of OPKs should give you a chart of when to start using them in your cycle. Are you charting? You should sign up at www.fertilityfriend.com and begin charting your cycles. Then you'll have a better idea for timing sex.
