Honestly, I don't think you even need to spend $50. I think a small token of graditude goes a long way. I was thinking some homemade cookies and maybe a pumpkin...packaged up cute.

If you want to spend $50 and don't need it to be terribly personal I'd go for a gift card, or a $25 gift card and another gift along the same lines... like if you got a Starbucks GC you could add a cute mug and small bag of coffee.
If you want it to be personal I'm more the type of person to bake something delicious!
I'm getting SIL a Mary Kay gift set that was half price...shhhh! MIL a photo organizer, she was showing me photos of the boys when they we're younger and they were all in a box, no rhyme or reason. SMIL is getting flowers and so is my mom.

Re: Baby shower hostess gifts
For my mom: I got her a pandora charm for her bracelet to symbolize our baby.
For my sister (who is also pg): I got her nursing pj's
For my little sister (who better NOT be pg!): I got her the laptop cord she needs and a gift card.
I have no idea what I'm going to get for my MIL as a hostess gift (assuming she follows through and actually throws a shower).
Do we have to buy hostess gifts for a work shower???
