How old is 'old enough' to use jogging stroller?

I had a mother tell me yesterday that DS shouldn't be in a jogging stroller until he's 6 months old. I was on a walk (not with the jogging stroller) and was passing a mom and mentioned I owned her stroller.

Her response was one of total shock- that I would own a stroller already when it will be so long until I can use one- and she was even more shocked when I said I purchased it before DS was born. She said something about the fact that I must have a lot of storage space... her snarkiness aside, when can I use a jogging stroller?

I figured I'd wait till I was cleared to run at my 6 week pp check up, and then put the stroller as flat as it could go and head out! If there's not enough head support I have a head support system I haven't used yet (the kind designed for car seats) and I can roll up receiving blankets around DS's head. He's a big boy (10 plus pounds) and has pretty good head control. He always sleeps in the stroller.

Am I nuts or is she? Do I really have to wait until DS is 6 months to start running? DH is in med school and has a crazy schedule- he can't watch DS during my runs consistently so I might as well just wait to start until DS can go in the stroller.

  • Sucks but jogging stroller isn't recommended until 6 months.  Because by then babies can handle the movement better and have better control of their heads, etc.  I'm very active too so I know how you feel!  Try dvd's at home for awhile with leisurely walks outside.

  • I'd check the instructions. My BOB said walking at 8 weeks and running at 8 months.  The pp is right, it shakes them too much.

This completely. Way too much bouncing for their little heads.

  • I just started using mine, be patient for now, he is a little too little for it still!
  • Darn. I'm seriously bummed now... I may have to get a babysitter so I can jog.

I'm seriously one of the world's most restless people. I hate being indoors, even in bad weather (I used to manage a stable and adored being outdoors all day long even in the worst weather). I'm not sure I can handle being indoors and unable to run for five more months! I'm walking three miles a day right now and I'm already feeling twitchy.

Maybe if I take more than one walk a day that would help...

Ugh, thanks for the advice, even though I'm kind of depressed now. I know you all understand though- and whatever is best for DS.

  • I felt comfortable running with the BOB when kiddo was very small - but with the car seat.  I was running on very smooth roads and not setting speed records for sure.

They need to be able to sit well on their own to be just in the seat.

  • Thanks for all the advice! I'm irritated that the other mom was right, because she had such an attitude about the whole thing. I don't know why she cared that I had already bought a stroller- does it really matter? Oh well.

I bought my stroller off of craigslist, so it didn't come with any manual. My car seat is supposed to clip in, so I may try it on smooth roads in another month or two, depending on how he is doing and what his pediatrician says.

DH had a good idea- after his 6AM feeding I may get up and walk over to the local high school (half a mile away) and jog on the track there. He sleeps when we walk, so I can put the stroller by the 'start' and check on him after each lap. It's a 1/4 mile track and I can always cut across if he gets fussy.

  • I started using the BOB with the car seat adapter on smooth city roads when she was about 8 weeks old. She had really good head control.

BTW - enjoy the time he is content sitting in the stroller. This phase ended for us at around 1 year old. She used to love the stroller but recently has no patience for sitting in it for more than 20 minutes. It's all about the playground these days.

  • we have the bob but i don't plan on using it till DS Is 6 months old.  I would advise against running/ jogging even on smooth city roads.  We know somoene who did that and had a pretty serious accident with their child who was strapped into the infant car seat.

This.  I started jogging (slowly) with the BOB when LO was 6 weeks (her first 5K run even!)  She's in the infant car seat on the BOB, so in my eyes it is no different than being in the car.  What is the difference really between a fast walk and a slow jog?
