S/O Useless gifts...

I have to share this one...and if you can tell me how it is useful you get brownie points.

My grandmother gave me a copy of Winnie the Pooh (the novel) translated into Latin for my baby shower.  

That is all.

    Haha! 

    When my now 2 year old nephew was 6 weeks old, he was in a daycare which taught French to the infants.  My ILs would be very into that kind of gift.

    Just because you can't read it doesn't mean it's useless!  I know plenty of people who would love to have that gift.  You should be happy she gave you something at all!

    is there a story with this one? like did she used to be a latin teacher or are you really into roman history or something along those lines?

    I did take Latin...in high school...12 years ago.  I couldn't begin to translate anything at this point in my life though.

    In all seriousness - it seems like something that would be cool to stash away until the LO is older. Who knows, maybe they will decide to be a Latin teacher and can use this in class one day?

    That's all I remember from 3 years of high school Latin.

    Trust me, I know where you're coming from. I took Spanish in high school. I can count to ten. Maybe she happened to see the book and remembered you had taken Latin and, not realizing you probably can't read it anymore, just got it for you thinking it was a cute gift.

    Latin sounds way cooler than Canadian french...we started in grade 4 and it was optional from grade 9 onward.

    Ha! Well I have purchased an old copy of the novel, but in English.  Maybe in HS your child can get extra credit in Latin class for translating it back into English?
