Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Nicknames that drive you crazy!!

My DD is 4 months today and is a very healthy size, 24 1/2 inches long and 14lbs 7oz. I dont consider her big at all. Our Dr. said she looks great and is very proportionate (sorry if thats spelled wrong). My IL's like to call her "Porky" and "Porkchops" and "Pork n Beans" they think it is just hilarious to call her these things and it drives me nuts! I dont like the names and I dont like them implying that she is a big baby, I think she is perfect obvisously. DH says to just ignore it and I do but I am so scared that it is going to stick and them want to call her these things when she is older and I will have no part of that! Oh and now they keep telling me to dress her as a pig for Halloween! My patience is getting very thin!

So I was wondering, does anyone call your LO a nickname that you just cant stand?

Re: Nicknames that drive you crazy!!

  • hmm ... luckily, no one calls LO by a nickname!  except for my grandma, who insists on calling him Lee instead of Levi, but that's a little better than "pork n beans"!

  • Wow. The pig Halloween costume is pushing it.  If DD doesn't thin out, are they going to keep this up her whole life? Like when she's in middle school and already hates looking in the mirror. Poor thing.  We don't really have any insulting nicknames like that but my MIL calls my son, Dez, "Desi" which is Desi Arnaz's nickname but his name was Desiderio not Desmond.  So...just a pet peeve for me.

Sorry, I totally lol'd at that sentence. My MIL calls LO "puddin' head", I'm not crazy about it.

  • My dh gave our oldest the nickname of "Butterbeans" when he was a baby - it has stuck and I got used to it.

He has given the baby the nickname of "Chubs" - since he has about 5 chins, but everytime I hear it, it reminds me of that character on The Goonies....lol. I'm starting to warm up to the nickname though.

  • Ok, I would tell them to STFU because gross, what horrid names for a little girl!

Some people call Alexandra AJ because her middle name starts with a J but of ALL the many nicknames for Alexandra, why the hell do you go with AJ???

  • 14 lbs at 4 months and they think that is big?  They'd be amazed at my 3 month old who was 15lbs 4 oz at her 2 month appt.  But I guess I'm a mean Mommy b/c I'm dressing her as a cow for Halloween.  I think it's funny she's so chunky right now.

We dressed P up as a cow for his first Halloween (he was the cutest thing). He was a year old by then, but still had baby fat on him.

  • Our nanny doesn't speak English, only Mandarin Chinese.  She calls DD "xiao guay guay" which means "little goody goody".  It grates on my nerves to hear it repeated over and over and over again (especially in a high-pitched sing-song voice).  I'm not convinced she even knows what DD's actual name is - I've never heard her call DD by name.

  • My FIL calls him cry baby all the time and it drives me crazy! DS does whine and fuss a lot but he calls him cry baby even when he isn't crying and then it makes him cry.

  • My MIL calls Emmalyn "Emmers" and it drives me nuts!  I think its sounds so stupid.  She does it because she used to call my BIL "Timmers".

Apparently everything she did with her kids I must live through and do as well.  They call the pacifier a Gucky...drives me NUTS!

I think its just because its the MIL...ha ha.  Ok enough of my rant.

    Oh Emmers Emmers Emmers...GAAAAAAAGGGGGG.

  • My dad's nickname for me was/is Chub. I didn't care when I was little, but it mortified me when he used it during my teen years, and it started to hurt when I started putting on extra weight and he wouldn't stop. Now, I am an overweight adult and it still hurts my feelings sometimes, but I know that it's not a personal jab. I'm just his "Chub" the way Severin is my "Buster." I just wish I got a cute nickname, like my sister (Doc).

I highly doubt a name makes a three month old cry.

I call my kid fatso and piggy all the time. He has no idea what it means, and I obviously find him adorable in his fatness. I mean the kid is a week away from 4 months and weighs 16.5 lbs. He's a chunk. I think it would bother me once the kid is old enough to understand, but calling infants fat doesn't bother me. Babies are supposed to be fat.

Edit: weighs not ways. Doing too many things at one time

Thanks! Ya, I know what you mean. It doesn't help coming from the "inlaws" either. :-)

  • My DH calls DS "Bacon." It drives me crazy. It evolved from him calling him Big N' as in slang for big one because DS was a pretty big baby at birth. He always called him that until one day he said "Big N'!, Big N'!, ..It's Bacon!!!!" as in the Beggin' Strips dog treats commercial.

Yeah, now he has songs made up as well. To the theme of Fr?re Jacques : "It's my bacon, It's my bacon, yes you are, yes you are, your the biggest bacon, your the biggest bacon, in the package, in the package." As well as the you-tube hit "Bacon is good for me".....

DH has everyone calling him this. DS is now on the smaller end of weight for his age 15% so it's pretty annoying. Now the part that doesn't make sense is that my sister started off calling DS "Ollie" while I was still pregnant since his middle name is Oliver, but DH made her stop because he found it annoying. I'd like to know how Bacon is less annoying than Ollie.

  • My dad calls my toddler "Soph" instead of Sophie. Like "sofa," minus the A.

It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. I really don't care for it.

But -- they live out of state and see her a few times a year, and I think it makes him feel good to have a special nickname for her. As stupid as I think it is. :P So DH and I let it go. I hope some day she will tell him, "My name is Sophie, not Soph!"

However, I will say that my dad's penchant for irritating nicknames did influence our name choice for #2. He hasn't come up with a NN for Elsa, and we figured the worst he could do was call her "El." :)

Now my grandmother calls our girls Sophia and Elsie -- which aren't nicknames, just the wrong names. But they see their great-grandparents once every couple of years and my grandma's memory is going anyway, so I don't feel like that's a battle I will ever win even if I said something.

Yes!  My mom calls DS her "boyfriend" and it makes me nuts!  Don;t have any clue where it came from, but she thinks it's cute.  Ugh.

Okay, now that one would squick me out.

  • MIL always calls DD "GAMMIES GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL"  in the MOST over the top baby talk. haha.
  • Not for DS, but my name is Lorraine...when I was 25 my mom started calling me Loranus out of the blue!!!  ARGH!
  • My MIL would call our first son "Sweet Pea".  Which, to me is girlie sounding, not to mention the fact that it is the name of my aunts dead DOG!  I hated (still hate) that nick name!

She calls our second son " 'Lil Bit".  I don't mind it as much.  But I'm also trying (REALLY HARD!) to be more tolerant of her.  It is a work in progress!!  :0)

  • I wouldn't like the nickname "Porky" in case they continued it when she got older either. Better to nip it in the butt now than to have to fight them later. My parents call my DD "Little D" meaning Little Diva, which I hate! Its just a modern form of Princess which I'm not a fan of either. Now with our DS my Mother has called him "LeeLee" in front of my twice and told me she would call him "Leo" and I have swiftly corrected her. He's not a girl and his name is Liam. Now my FIL says that he can't say Liam so he's just gonna call him "Matt" for his middle name or "Buster". I already don't like my FIL so lets not get into that, lol.
  • At 4 months and 17lbs, 25.5 inches long, CHUNKY MONKEY is the nickname that might fit my well breast-fed son, but I can't stand it!!
  • I might have a winner here- my father calls my son Methane Mason because he has stinky gas....he calls him this in public, at home, where ever.  It drives me nuts- he thinks he's so funny.

Aw they should meet my 4 month old.  She had similar stats to yours when she was 3 months.  She grew 2 inches and gained two lbs from 3-4 months.  She's now 16 lbs 5 oz and 26.5 inches! hehe

Nicknames I hate... DD's name is Adina.  I hate when people call her Dina.  Reminds me of stereotypical spoiled chicks (think real housewifes of NJ Dina, and just sounds like a Jersey Shore character :oP )  Her nicknames from us are Adi, or Deeni from my Dad which is ok.  However, I don't know why but it irritates the heck out of me when my aunt calls her, online, Addie.  She doesn't have two D's in her name or any E's.  It's Adi :oP  That's about it though.  DH doesn't like nicknames in general haha but I told him I did, and I carried this child for 9 months and had to push her out and recover from that soooo if I decide to give her a nickname then so be it haha.

FIL calls him either "Little X" or "the xman" or "papaws best buddy".

God love 'em, but it drives me crazy.

  • Lol...I thought I was the only one who had this problem.  My FIL call my DS fat, but in Spanish because he thinks it is nicer.  He always comments on how 'big'  my DS is, and it drives me bonkers!  My DS is seven months and is 17 lbs and to me he seems just perfect (along with the doctor).

Thank you everyone for sharing your stories as it has helped me to know I am not the only one dealing with 'fantastic' nicknames.

  • Katie calls Sarah "Turd" all the time.  That's the only one that gets to me. It seems like everyone in the family has their own silly name for her, and some are doozies, but they all love her.  At the end of the day, that's all that's important.  A nickname is not worth getting my knickers in a knot over.
  • When I was pregnant and people would ask DS's name, the first thing they would say is, "Oh, JJ." It made me so mad, not JJ... Jonah James, ugh!

  • DS's name is Jack...it really doesn't get much shorter than that, but people insist on calling him something else.  I hate Jackie (he is not a girl), and JD (his middle name is David).  Seriously people, his name is 4 freaking letters and one syllable, must you really nickname it?  Just call the kid by his freaking name!  My mom has started calling me the name nazi... so annoying.

  • DD's name is Arya, & my youngest SIL has said numerous times that she's going to call her: Are Ya Crazy?. It's quite annoying since it wasn't that amusing the first time she said it, & she still keeps saying it. Once was more than enough! My MIL keeps trying to make 'Chunk of Change' her nickname, but she's the only one that says it so I don't see it sticking, especially if she slims out like her daddy. She does have several little rolls & a double chin right now.  I made the mistake of calling her our Junebug when she was born & now my DH insists on calling her Bug all the time. It would be cute except that one of my friends calls her 2-y-o dd that so it kind of feels like we stole it from her or being copy-cats. They live a couple of hours away so we don't see them very often, though. I usually call her my dumpling or pretty baby. My bff has jokingly called her KJ for Kenneth, Jr. since she looks so much like her daddy, but not annoyingly often.

I had a cousin nicknamed Tubby since he had been a chunky baby. When they get old enough, hopefully they'll put an end to those painful names themselves, but some kids are too shy to say anything even though it hurts them. I agree with nipping it in the bud before it can do damage, but I also think society has become a little too thin-skinned in some instances.

  • oh, i can't tell you how many times i've told my parents "his name is WILLIAM", but my mother calls him billy the kid, and my dad and sister call him willy. drives me up the freakin wall. if i wanted to have my child called by a nickname, i would do what my MIL did and name the child by a nickname

(she wanted to name her third daughter Miranda, and call her Randi, but eventually just named the girl Randi. awesome girl, too. comically enough, that daughter is the only one of her six kids that didn't grow up with a retarded nickname)
