I read like a crazy person, and seem to have passed on this craziness to my kids. ![]()
We have 2x 4' wide by 5' tall bookshelves in the living room (packed. one paperbacks and one hardcover), one set of 3 shelves in the family room ( 2 shelves children's books, 1 shelf my cookbooks/craft books), a bookshelf in DDs room with all of the board and baby books, and a 5 shelf unit of books in the basement of books the kids will 'grow into'.
I can't even guess at an exact count, and probably don't want to know how many we actually have.

Re: How many books do you have in your house?
Fewer than I did a few weeks ago, since I just brought several boxes of both adult and kid books in to work to give away (and what doesn't get taken I'll take to the library or goodwill to donate).
I'm a crazy reader too and I like buying books for the kids. My getting a Kindle about a year ago (and starting to use the library more often) has cut me back quite a bit
Oh hell.
2 6ft tall by 3ft wide bookcases full. 2 4ft tall by 28?inch wide full. One 2by4 full. 4 of the 9 cubes full in DS's room. 2 large baskets full (basketfulls?), and half the entertainment center.
Plus 7 or 8 boxes of books we packed up, in our basement. And 5 more boxes at his dad's house.
Between the built-ins in the living room, the stand-alone shelves in our rooms, and the books in boxes in the garage? Hundreds, easily. I've got a mild case of the book hoarding. LOL
I donate about 100 books every time we move & I''m donating quite a few to E's school rummage sale next week, but there are at least 100 books I'm not wiling to part w/.
I have 2 giant bookcases full of books that I randomly pick up and of cookbooks.
DD has a large bookcase full of bokks too.
I keep telling myself that if I get a kindle I will free up more space in the house.
We have a library instead of a formal living room. We have 6 bookcases with three shelves in each, plus a bottom part w/ glass. Half of the shelves are filled w/ books. DD has a dedicated bookcase. Last count she had 100+ books. Almost all were gifts, and my boss gave me two paper grocery bags FULL of books from his girls.
For DH and I, probably a few hundred.
Christmas 2011
No idea. DH is an academic (archaeologist) and I got my master's degree in art history, so we have tons of art, history, archaeology, etc. books. Plus I love to read fiction, so I have tons of novels around. And I used to be an elementary school teacher and my mom taught elementary school for 30+ years, so the kids have probably 200 books of their own at least.
We have two large bookshelves in our family room that are packed, two more large ones in DH's office that are also packed, and then the huge shelving unit in DS1's room that has a ton of children's books in it.
Just a whole load of books, really. They make moving even more painful than it would normally be.

Ahhh, I feel much better. DH is not a reader, and asks me all the time if we need all of these books. Duh, of course we do. I reread them all. the. time.
I did just sort out about 40 books that I either hated or have never read and never will. The rest are mine! All mine!!

DD - December 2008
The kids have a lot. We have 4 medium to large bookcases of their books, plus several baskets scattered about the house filled with books.
H and I, however, are cheap and get ours from the library. We actually own only two small bookcases worth, many of which were gifts or bought a long time ago.
I have no clue, but too many!
We just moved, so I am drowning in boxes of books, but I can't part with them. We're using part of our big family room/great room as an office and we plan to get some bigger bookshelves because we have two full bookshelves and stacks of boxes of books in that area right now. We also have several boxes in the garage waiting to come in.
MH bought me a kindle for my birthday after moving my books for 4th time and unpacking most of them. LOL.
And Jackson and Scarlett have two bookshelves full of books.
Liam is 5!

DD2 - 12.03.09
DD3 - 3.28.11
Hundreds. I have my BA in English, so I alone have my own bookcase filled with Norton Anthologies and novels.
Each of the girls has her own 4 shelf bookshelf with books, too.
If we are out I would rather buy boosk than toys -- so we end up with a lot of them!
DH keeps bugging me to get rid of some of them -- especially mine, because chances are I'm never going to open them up again -- but I just can't do it!
Not too many books for grown ups since we get ours from the library or pass them on when finished.
DD has a shitton. I teach and can get some great deals. I am always buying her books.
You take my ovaries, I take your yarns.
