3rd Trimester

Sleeping arrangements: esp. 2nd time moms

We are going to be moving a few months after Baby is born, but not sure exactly when.  Could be 3 months, could be 6.  All depends on what happens with our house/jobs.

So, I was thinking of NOT buying a crib because I read that it's best for baby to sleep in our room with us for the first 6 months so I wanted to get a Pack n Play bassinet and keep it in our room and then when we move, we will look into a crib.

But now I've read a few things that say a crib is much safer than a pack n play and that babies will outgrow pack n plays very quickly.  So, what has been your experience with sleep places or what are you planning for sleeping arrangements?

Thanks.

  • I think a pack n play is just fine.  DS still fits in his (although not very well) and is 2.5.  Obviously it isn't his every day bed.  For six months it should be just fine.

  • alex went directly into her crib in her room & so will baby#2.

but if you're going to be moving & such- i don't see any reason why a pack & play or co-sleeper wouldn't work out well for you.

  • A 6 month old, even a large one, can easily sleep in a pack n play. If you want a bassinet that is easy to move/put in storage and can hold baby to 25lbs, I'd suggest the fisher price rock n play sleeper. We had DS in that until 5.5 months and it worked great.

  • Im pretty sure that my boys slept at our bedside in a basinett for about 2-3 months. Id say after that point, a crib is definitely safer. Babies all grow/mature at different rates, so LO may be ready for a crib at that point--both size wise and developmentally. Not to mention--youll probably be ready for LO to be in his/her room.

For this one, we will also have a basinett in our room for nighttime--and naptime will be split between either the PNP (downstairs) or her crib (upstairs)--depending on where we are/what we're doing.

I agree. Just know that some babies do have issues with changes to their sleeping arrangements. I know several people who had co-sleepers and their babies had a really difficult time transitioning to their own room and a crib. Other babies have no issues.

  • you would be fine using a pack n play for 3-6 months as the babies primary bed.  ds slept in our room for 4 1/2 months in his bassinet.

  • It's true that a baby could outgrow the bassinet feature of the pack n play, but the pack n play itself can be used well into the toddler stage.

I know in my experience, I love having DD in her crib in her own room at night because DH and I get much better sleep if we don't hear all the little noises she makes through the night,  but it's really up to you. I don't think one is any better or safer than the other.

  • If it were me, I would get a crib so its one less change for the baby once you move.

DD #1 passed away in January 2011 at 14 days old due to congenital heart disease
DD#2 lost in January 2012 at 23 weeks due to anhydramnios caused by a placental abruption
  • when our bassinet was recalled, we used the pnp as a bassinet and it worked out just fine!
  • Could you buy a crib and put that in your room?  Or are you trying to avoid buying a crib right now because of the move?

DS was in his crib in his own room from 2 weeks on because he was such a noisy sleeper!  I had originally intended for him to be with us for 3ish months, but I never got any sleep with all of his squirming/grunting.  That being said, we have traveled multiple times, and have had no problem with DS sleeping in the pnp.

  • We put DD in her crib from day one and plan to do the same for LO.

  • Our son stayed in out room in a pack n play bassinet until I went back to work at 6 weeks. After that he went into his own room. We will be doing the same thing for this baby, prob for less time seeing I will not be going back to work.

There is a weight limit on the Pack n Play bassinet but I do not remeber what it is I know my son hit it before 6 months seeing he is built like a tank.

My personal opinion is to not let them get into there "true" sleeping habit while still in your room. My son used to wake up whenever we rolled or my husband snored. Once we moved him into his own room he began to sleep threw the night ( that didnt last long due to some health issue)

Each baby will be different and so will each set of parents, My nephew slept in bed with my SIL for almost a year. So you figure out what is best for you and what you are comfy with and take it from there : )

  • have you looked into the portable or mini cribs?  They are small and portable and would fit a small space.  We ended up going with a portable crib with this baby #2 to save space since she will be sharing a room with our daughter. We have the bassinet/pack n play from our first daughter, but a mini crib will last longer and they aren't much more than some of the pack n plays.  I think we paid like $130 at Babies R Us for our mini crib.
