Helpful advice people give, that's not so helpful?

What's some crazy advice you've been given during your pregnancy?

The one I was thinking about which I guess isn't really advice is when I go overdue, people always try to help me feel better by telling me "noone is pregnant forever."

This always bugs me- I know I'm not going to be pregnant forever but going overdue sucks and just let me be miserable, I think I earned that after 9+ months of pregnancy!

  • I am not even overdue yet and I am already miserable. I have been having inconsistent contractions that are *almost timeable* for 3 weeks now and my IL's decided to go on vacation for 2 weeks right before I'm due so now I am getting all of the "hold him in until we get back" comments...

the worst advice IMO is "sleep while you can"... I can't sleep so I don't see how this is helpful at all!

  • I have 4 days left and I am DONE...lol I honestly didnt think I would still be pregnant. Best advice, must be when people say "its good for baby to be in as long as they can so they can so they are healthy when they come out".

Of course, we all want a healthy baby, so this makes me feel better about baby staying in!!

  • I particularly am sick of "enjoy these last weeks of your life without a child now because it's OVER once that baby comes out....no more doing anything fun, no more spontaneous outings, no more sleep, etc."  I want to explain to them that I was the farthest thing from a social debutante to begin with; my husband and I love to stay in and make dinner together with a good movie and a bowl of popcorn.  We don't traipse all over downtown and "woop it up" every night.  So how can a baby sitting in a bassinet next to us damper those plans THAT much?  Furthermore, we chose this next chapter in our lives because frankly, sitting around and staring at each other was getting a little boring.  :)  We're so ready for the fun, challenges, and tasks that a baby creates for us!
  • My MIL told me that if the baby is crying it means she is hungry and that we should give her rice cereal even if she is ONE DAY OLD. Thanks, but no thanks!!!!

  • oh my dad is the kind of advice (funny since he's never been through labor, delivery, or breastfeeding).  some of his gems:

"just take your own meds to the hospital" - referring to pain management during delivery.  this was after i told him my goal was to not have any pain meds.

"oh you'll know whether you'll be able to breastfeed in two or three days" - yea right.  some women don't even get their milk in til the fifth day.  silly dad.

"well i came from the generation where if your kid bites them, then you bite them back." - no thanks dad.  i do believe in discipline but i won't bite my child.

"don't expect a good baby.  expect a baby that cries all the time and is spoiled.  its your first so there is no way you'll have a good baby.  its just the way it is"

"now watch those contractions.  timing isn't a science and we don't want that baby falling out in a parking lot somewhere" - after being discharged from the hospital at 35w because my contractions were too far apart.  a week and a half later i'm still contracting and poor dad is a little freaked out.

"put a biohazard sign on the carseat so no one will touch her" - referring to how to handle having a newborn at the beginning of flu season.

....guess thats enough for now.  oh how i just love my father.

  • Thankfully, I don't get pregnancy related advice anymore - I think people feel like I've been pregnant long enough that I no longer need advice.

I hate getting baby-related advice, especially because the friends that give us this advice are always the ones whose parenting styles we don't agree with.  And it's always stuff that differs from baby to baby.

This. DH and I have acquaintances who give us baby-related advice and we just nod and smile since they are miserable in their marriage (everyone but them see this) their kids are devil children, and they don't communicate with each other. We often think to ourselves, "WHY would we WANT to be like you?!"

So funny, because my MIL told my SIL the exact same thing when she had her first baby. MIL also said she did this with all 3 of her kids and they turned out fine. (She also smoked with all 3 pregnancies and they turned out fine for the most part, doesn't mean I'm doing it!!)

  • That's really funny and I think it's a generational thing.  I've heard that a LOT from the 50+ year old crowd.  That, and all of my girlfriends with babies have fought with their MIL over this very issue.  Weird.  What were they telling them back then?!
