Diaper Genie/Dekor

Is a Diaper Genie or Diaper Dekor really necessary?  I've read that a regular covered garbage pail would be sufficient and that the refill bags for the Diaper Genie and Diaper Dekor can get pricey.  Any advice?  TIA.

  • You heard right.  Not necessary.  Basically just an overpriced plastic trash can with a lid.

  • I really love our Diaper Genie.  It keeps the smell in, and the refills aren't expensive, IMO.  I get coupons for 3 packs of the refills all the time.

  • People debate this all the time.  The biggest complaint I've heard about the diaper disposal systems is that the cans themselves end up stinking after awhile because the plastic absorbs odors from the diapers.  Not to mention that by the time you change the bags, they smell terrible because it takes 4 - 5 days to fill up each bag.  The refills aren't ridiculously expensive, but definitely cost more than regular trash bags.

After consulting with some friends, we decided to buy a small stainless steel trash can with a foot pedal and a tight-sealing lid, along with one of those storage containers for plastic shopping bags.  Our plan is to wrap stinky diapers in a plastic shopping bag before placing it in the trash can, and then empty the trash can every day or two (this is easy for us because the nursery is close to the front door of our apartment, and the trash chute is just down the building hallway).

I might feel differently about the diaper disposal systems if I lived in a house with a nursery upstairs, where it wasn't so easy to take out the trash every day.

  • Regular cans smell more- even if you double wrap the diapers (that is what we use at my mom's house)... I have the diaper genie and it contains the smell of my 2 year olds diapers!  I usually have to buy a refill about once a month and take the diapers out 1-2 times a week.  It only smells when you open it to empty it.  The plastic will eventually absorb some smell but I aired it out on a warm sunny day once and it eliminated it completely.  It's worth it.
  • Thanks for all of the feedback, though it seems split pretty evenly on whether they are necessary or not.  I'll have to think about it some more before I register or buy one.  Thanks!

  • not necessary but if you're registering, I think a registry is a big ol' nice to have list to begin with so I didn't limit myself to just must haves.  I have used my diapter genie elite for almost 6 months now and DS has been on solids for 1 month.  I smell nothing and I like it that way.  I always buy the refills on sale in the 3 pack and that has worked out well.
