baby aaron zachary was born at 9:09 last night, 7 lbs 4 oz, and is doing great!
the birth story . . . :
i'm not gonna lie, ladies, it was brutal. four hours after my water broke there was no sign of me going into labor, so they induced with pitocin. i had decided that i wanted to do an unmedicated birth due to some concerns about possible disadvantages for the baby (i'm just super over-cautious about that sort of thing), and the pitocin contractions definitely lived up to their reputation of being hellishly painful. we hadn't done a lamaze class or anything since we were expecting a c-section until recently, so all i had to hold myself together were my mom's instructions on breathing that she gave me over the phone. the contractions were 2-3 minutes apart for about 6 hours, and during that time i was able to halfway stay sane doing breathing and concentration stuff. during that time period i dilated to 6 cm, so a cm an hour. then i went from 6 to 10 in one hour . . . and that hour was the worst hell i've ever experienced. the pain was so horrible any kind of breathing/concentration technique was absolutely impossible, all i was capable of doing was moaning in agony and throwing up or dry heaving with every contraction (thank god for zofran--they finally stopped the vomiting, but i stll couldn't do much except cry, moan, and writhe around). and i was terrified because i thought i had four hours to go! fortunately after about an hour they checked me again and found me fully dilated and with a very low baby ready to come out! the pushing part was definitely easier to tolerate than the contractions, even though i did get three tears (one second-degree, two first-degree). after 20 minutes he was out.
at that point i thought we were all done with the hard part, but boy, was i wrong! turns out that doing a vaginal delivery with my low-lying placenta was dangerous after all, and they just couldn't stop the bleeding. it took about 45 minutes to get it under control, which they finally did by inserting a balloon into my uterus. at that point i had lost over 1/4 of my blood supply. obviously they wouldn't let me be near the baby while they were trying to stop the bleeding, and i needed DH near me because the stuff they were doing was so painful. fortunately our friend had come to take pictures and i asked her to stay with the baby to keep him company until i could hold him. they finally let me cuddle him for a while and then sent him to the nursery--they said that they needed to focus on taking care of me overnight while they made sure i was stable. it broke my heart for him to go to the nursery, and i'm also sad because he's had a lot of formula-feeding already (because of the GD--they want to prevent hypoglycemia). i had really wanted to EBF for the first few months, so that's a big disappointment. i hope the lactation consultant can get us nursing properly ASAP.
so that's our birth story! probably the hardest day of my life and the best day of my life at the same time. thanks so much to all of you for your well wishes yesterday!! i will try to keep up with this board as well as SAIF over the next few months, but if i'm not around much know that i will be thinking of all of you and sending tons of healthy baby vibes to everyone.

Congrats! Sorry for the bleeding, but I'm glad the labor was quick! I hated pictocin! Blech!

Definitely see a lactation consultant as soon as you can-- both my boys were formula-fed in the hospital but I got to breast feeding them as soon as my milk came in and they have been breast fed ever since.
The first few weeks will be crazy, but you'll be back here soon! Congratulations!!!
Congrats!!!
(And I hope to go med-free so you saying how awful the pain was but still making it through is really inspiring for me!)

Hopefully the lactation consultant will be able to help you. And FWIW, Vivian was in the NICU for two days and because of my c-section I didn't get to see her for 16 hours. She was given formula in the NICU, and I had trouble getting a chance to pump and go see her. She did get some pumped milk, but she got more formula than anything else the first couple of days. I'd hoped to be able to breastfeed on the table. But she suffered no ill effects and nurses like a champ, so hopefully it will be just a minor blip for you too!
