Parenting after a Loss

Any formula fed babies still getting up in mid of night? Normal?

My DD is still getting up at least once a night. In general about 6 hours after she's gone to bed. We feed her a 7 oz bottle before bedtime and she has slept all the way to 5-6 am before but she alwasy seems to wake up at least once a night around 2:00 am to eat. We give her 4 oz bottle and then she goes right back to sleep. Is that right to do or should that 7 oz bottle be enough to hold her through the night do you think?

Sorry just kinda confused if we should try to wean her off a middle of the night feeding or if it's still okay for her to be waking up to eat in the middle of the night? Is it just different child to child? She's only been on straight formula for about a month so I'm still trying to figure it all out...

Thanks!!

  • DD sttn from beginning of July without waking up to eat in the night until about a week ago.  Since then she wakes up most nights 1 time to eat.  I was thinking maybe this is either a growth spurt, or the 4 month wakeful for her?  I don't want it to become a habit, but I thin she really is hungry since she wakes up screaming, and will fall asleep before the bottle is even over usually.  I really hope she goes back to STTN soon though!

  • Just went to our 9 mo appt and dr said it was ok for DD to still be getting up once a night to nurse.  We have her on formula about 75% of the time and the rest breastmilk.  She was STTN at about 6 mo, and then started getting up once a night again.

  • K goes to sleep around 7 and always wakes up around 2-3 and needs to eat. So, yeah, I'd say normal, at least in my house!

  • Our pedi told us to stop feeding her in the middle of the night at our 6 month appt. She gets plenty throughout the day. We actually started putting her to bed awake, and now she is STTN. The pedi also recommended this as one way to help. he said once she learned to put herself to sleep, she would wake in the night and do the same thing, just like we do. I guess it worked for us. I didn't want to deny her when she was hungy, but I don't think she actually was, even though we thought she was. Lkstor had suggested feeding her 1 oz less and watering the formual down a bit more as a way to gradually wean. We started to do this, but once she was going to sleep on her own, we didn't have to continue.

We also make sure she eats in the evening, solids, then a bottle - usually around 6:30. She is in bed by 8:00.

  • We broke DS of night eating about a month ago, as pedi, just agreed that he didn't need it. He's still working on the STTN, and can do it about 4 nights a week.  The other nights he still gets up about once a night, but doesn't eat when he is up!
