Preemies

Pre-E question. Relating to high blood pressure.

Okay, this might be kind of long but I could really use some reassurance! I ended up having my son at 34 weeks because of pre-e. I had severely high blood pressure. It only got worse after I delivered- which is supposed to be the cure for pre-e. I spent 9 days after I had Luke in the hospital because they couldn?t find the right combo of meds to keep my blood pressure low. It was going all the way up to 200/130. Finally, they found the right combo of two different meds three times a day. Now that I?m home my husband checks my BP manually and we have an electric one. (not the wrist kind-it blows up around arm.) Well, if I go up the stairs, walk to far, cry, watch an intense episode of law and order, basically do anything, my blood pressure will go up. Its so annoying and I?m starting to go crazy. My son is in the NICU and everyday I have to lay here so my BP doesn?t go up and then visit him and come home and rest. So my meds barely keep the BP at bay. Here?s my question: My doctors said that it will eventually go down in the next 6 weeks when my body gets rid of all the pregnancy hormones. Did any one else experience blood pressure issues this bad from pre-e? If you did how long before it went away!? I?m starting to go crazy thinking my life will be like this forever. I just don?t get it because I?m on all these meds and one day my BP will be back to normal? Wouldn?t my meds make my BP too low then?

Re: Pre-E question. Relating to high blood pressure.

  • My BP came down some after giving birth but was still too high. When I delivered it was at 205/103 and 2 days later when it was still at 160/90. I was lucky and it could be controlled by medication (60mg Procardia twice a day) and I kept levels of about 145/85. I was able to come off the medication after 6 months. when my BP was reading "normal" levels while on the meds. Now my BP is normally in the 120/75 area with no medication.
A small start at 2lb 9oz, 60 day NICU stay, and 6 months of O2 My 30 weeker is growing up! <a href="http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j320/bippy798/?action=view

  • I'm glad you asked this because i was wondering the same the only difference is i stupidly stopped my meds since i felt and my bp was down well it got out of control the past two days witha  diastolic of 105 at its highest. I'm looking for the same that after 6 weeks it just goes away
  • I also had my LO at 34 weeks due to pre-e.  My blood pressure was not high enough to require longer than usual hospitalization (or further meds once I was off the magnesium), but it didn't go back to normal until my 6 week appointment.  Hopefully yours will shape up soon!

  • I was in the hospital 9 days post delivery for my daughter (she was born at 30 weeks).  They had trouble controlling my bp it took them several attempts with different meds.  I was released on procardia.  A couple of days later while in the nicu I didn't feel well and they took me to l&d triage.  My bp out of control again.  I was prepped to be readmited but they upped my meds and sent me home.  I had to get my bp checked every day at either l&d or at the ob clinic until the doctors were happy with my bp.  I was almost admitted 2 other times.  I was on the meds for over 6 months.  My doctor told me that if I started feeling light headed or dizy that i would prob.  be feeling that if my bp got too low.  My bp has never returned to the level it was before pregnacy.  I usually was about 90/60.  I now am 120/85.

  • Bp upon admission for pre-e 190/120. Took max amts of two meds and still not controlled. Delivered at 28 weeks. Stayed in Hospital for 8 days discharged on those two meds. (labetolol and norvasc) Took about 3 weeks and once the swelling went down and I lost the "water weight" my Bp bottomed out. Slowly reduced my meds. Now 4 1/2 months out my Md finally took me off the last small dose I was on. Which i find interesting since i did have high blood pressure before I was pregnant.
  • I think everyone is different. I had severe pre-E and my bp didn't go back down for a whole year. I had even changed my diet after about 2 months of no changes and one day a nurse finally told me - You had a traumatic experience, you are going to have to be patient with your body to readjust back to normal.
  • It took a few weeks before my BP was stable (as in not bouncing around).  I'm still on meds, and I will be for life as my unmedicated BP is 150/100.  My DD1 will be four in Jan, so I'm pretty sure I'm stuck.  If yours isn't down in a few months, seeing a cardiologist is helpful.
  • I had pre e with both of my children.  The first time around my bp went down right after labor.  With this second one I had to go on medication because it would not come down and I will probably have to be on it for a while.  Good luck to you and I hope it goes back to normal!
