3rd Trimester

Water just broke, no contractions yet...Anyone awake?

My water broke about 15 minutes ago but I'm not having contractions, just very mild cramping. DH is asleep.....should I just wait til morning to call the dr. if I'm still feeling o.k.?  I don't know why I feel like I don't know what to do now when I've been to the prenatal classes, etc... !

Me: 42, DH: 43. We are so grateful to have a 2yr old daughter, conceived naturally after 3 miscarriages & no treatments (our Dr. gave us 1 more month to try on our own before advacing to IVF, & we conceived her naturally in January 2010)! Trying since April 2011 without sucess....MD said we were both "fine" & that if it wasn't happening, it was a chromosomal issue. Finally started Follistim 225mcg injections with an Ovidrel trigger November 2012. Bleeding 11 days post Ovidrel on November 25th. Starting the whole lab/Ultrasound/Follistim cycle again on November 27th...

  • I know when my wife went into labor with our twins (at 33.5wks) we'd just had an appt and were told they were both head down and in good positions so just sleep as long as she could......though he forgot to mention that they'd be making their appearance only 5hrs later....kids are fun!

As long as you aren't uncomfortable, and the contractions arent too close together, healthy pregnancy, and your L&D place is a short drive away, chillax, have a drink (water.....just water....), and enjoy the last night of total quiet

  • Thanks!  I just cleaned the kitchen & now I think I'll sleep. I'll give the doc a call around 6a.m.

The one thing I'm worrying about is that if my water broke, is the baby still surrounded by enough fluid? I should have asked about this in class, before it actually happened!

You continue to produce the fluid after your water breaks, so I wouldn't worry. 6 am is probably a good time to call, enough for a nap but still not too long after your water broke.  Good luck!

What she said.....it can be up to 72hrs til baby comes after water breaks (from my personal, tailgate army medical, experience), and babies were always fine....unless you feel weird, it should be fine

  • how exciting. good luck. this is my first pg but my sisters water broke earl in the am she took shower cleaned the house vacumed etc.. woke up her dh went the hospital and iwthin 20 min my neice was born .

i only hope mine goes that easy

  • When my water broke with DD (at around 12:30AM) they had me come right in.  When I called they wanted to know the color of the water (clear, cloudy) and if it had any foul smell to it.

Granted, I was only 35 weeks so maybe that is why they wanted me in right away.  My DD was born almost exactly 12 hours after my water broke.  GL!

  • My water broke at about 5:30 AM, I called about half hour later.  There's not really an urgency, but I would call sooner rather than later.  You're lucky if you can sleep, I was gushing so much fluid I couldn't take a step without leaving a puddle.

  • I would call right away. The nurse teaching my childbirth class said that it's important to call because the typically want you to give birth with 24 hours of your water breaking or risk having baby get an infection or worse getting meconium in their lungs.
