I think I'm just going to make my own sling..

I want a ring sling but don't feel like spending upwards of 50 bucks for something I could easily make myself. I used to be a costume designer, so how hard could it be?

Anyone have any suggestions as to what kind of fabric to use and what's a good length? Or, where I can get a less expensive ring sling in case I feel like being lazy and just buying one after all?

I really ought to go into business making this kind of stuff. Seems to be a fabulous market for it..

  • BFab just made herself one and it looks great!

And I get all of my rings from slingring.com I have rings in almost every color the sell to use with my wraps and they ship pretty quickly.

  • I recently made one with Onsaburg  fabric and some steel rings from Lowes.  I wasnt sure if I would like it, and didn't want to spend a bunch of money never to use it.  Now I know I will for sure buy a good quality and comfy one for baby #2 (if and when lol), and DS brings me the DIY one occasionally and wants to be carried!

  • I don't remember which of the links in NCBelle's siggy has another link to a website with instructions as well as fabric suggestions but it's what I used to make my pleated shoulder sling and I love it. I think I spent maybe $10 making it. Way better deal IMO
  • I've made several myself, and given some as gifts to friends- they're really easy. You can purchase rings from www.slingrings.com that are seamless and tested up to 200 lbs- very safe!

I typically use linen, mostly b/c it feels amazing, is super sturdy and really easy to care for. You can also use silk, or a thicker cotton. I'd avoid using a calico or thinner cotton, unless you double it up with linen or something thicker- those types of fabric would be apt to fray and wear more quickly. I have also converted woven wraps into slings, which works really well.

  • I am sooo not crafty so no advice there, but sleepingbaby.net has them for great prices and I love mine.

  • I was going to make a sling (or convince my MIL to make me one) and I found this: https://www.mayawrap.com/n_sewsling.php

That's where I found the instructions. I asked my MIL if she'd make one out of linen but she was skeptical about the fabric. I'm looking forward to hearing about other ppl's cloth choices.

  • Hmmmmm I think I might be getting back into my Etsy store.. My sewing setup has been lonely far too long I think! I might also like to play with the idea of dyeing my own fabric for custom colors and whatnot. Once I find a good basic material(s) for slings that is. I think I found something to keep me busy while I SAH! Lol.

Ditto Sleepingbaby.net she has AMAZING ring slings for great prices and I love mine from her. She is a WAHM as well and has instructions for her slings but asks that you do not use them for resale but for yourself only.

I figure I could probably make a couple of slings for the same cost as buying one anywhere online. Might as well use my seamstress training for once.. I haven't really looked too much at any instructions, just pictures of different slings. It seems pretty darn simple to me, and I think I could pretty easily even add some shoulder padding since I have some shoulder issues as well. Money is just so tight now that I don't feel justified spending so much on anything. I would LOVE to have a long woven wrap too, but those are so expensive, even on the FSOT board. Grrrr money SUCKS!

  • I've made a couple of my own and love them!  I even get complements on them.  I get the material at JoAnn's with a 40-50% off coupon (in the paper almost every Sunday).

Here's the website I used to learn to make mine (I used fabric glue):  https://slingyourbaby.blogspot.com/
