Car seats and leather upholstery

Hi, my car has leather seats and I read somewhere recently that car seats can cause permanent indentation marks in the upholstery.

If you have leather seats, did you put any type of protector under the seats or did something like an old towel or blanket suffice...or is this something that I should be worried about?

eg. I saw something like this:

but obviously if I can save $60 I would be happy (this same product is $8 more at BRU in Canada...grrr!)

Re: Car seats and leather upholstery

  • We use something like that.  We tried it without but the Marathons were digging big time into the leather seats.  I know they say you shouldn't use them and it voids the Britax warranty, but we have the seats very tight and secure on the mat thing.

  • I did not use anything in my car (Ford Edge leather seats)- I had a Maxi Cosi infant seat/base and then a Britax Roundabout. Just sold it last month. No marks. I have never heard of this!
  • We have leather seats and no issues yet in a year.

  • I have leather seats in my car and I was told by the police officer who put the seats in my car that we should not put anything under the carseats...
  • A friend gave us those same seat protector thingies. When we got our carseats inspected no one said anything about not using the protectors so they're still there.

  • We have the Eddie Bauer seat savers from Target. They are inexpensive, lookg nice, and have convenient storage pockets on the part that hangs over the end of the seat.
  • YOu can put shelf liner under the seat, but that's about it. Those seat protectors compromise your install. They might seem tight and slip in a crash.
  • we use the ones you posted. I found them cheaper on Amazon.com though.

Thanks for the tip - I never thought of this. I will definitely ask the cops when they install the seats too - I'm sure they've seen everything!

I am a Certified Passenger Safety Technician. When I got certified, the only thing recommended is the foam drawer liners. LIke the PP said, those fancy ones you buy in the store are NOT crash tested, and therefore can compromise the install. Besides, the foam drawer liners are $2 at Walmart, save yourself the $60. They protect the seat without compromising the install.

Thank you for sharing this.  We just switched from the infant seats to Britax seats and I was wondering about this and thinking we should buy something.  I am glad we didn't.
