Breastfeeding trouble, help!

Hi ladies,

I'm actually only 8 weeks and this is for my friend who has a 6 wk old.

She's about to give up, said the there is thrush, an issue with the baby being "tongue tied",  and the baby isn't getting enough milk. She's going to formula tomorrow.

Any advice for my dear friend?

TIA!

  • She should call a lactation consultant asap and her doctor as well since my understanding is that you need antibiotics to clear up thrush (but I'm not positive, I never had it).

  • Those are some problems that really need some help from a pro- a lactation consultant in the least, but probably a pediatrician. There are some home remedies for thrush, but if she's on the verge of giving up breastfeeding, I'd go straight to the doc.

6 weeks was really the big turning point for us- it was really unpleasant until that point, then everything just magically got better- very sudden and very dramatically. (I've actually heard similar things from other moms as well.) I'd try to talk her into trying to address the issues- say give these solutions a shot and if they don't work, you can quit- but at this stage, buying an extra week may get her around the corner and into the easy part of breastfeeding.

  • For thrush use a mixture of vinegar and water (diluted to the point where you can barely smell the vinegar) on baby and herself until she can get into the doctor.  Definitely a LC to help with the latch issues.

I quit at that point and I really do wish I had tried to push through the issues we were having at the time because I really really miss breastfeeding!

  • The beginning is the most difficult time - It only gets better from there. I would encourage her to seek help from a lactation consultant or le leche league, and in the meantime just know that it will get better.

  • We had thrush for 4 months so tell her I PROMISE it will not always be that painful! She needs to see her pedi and her doc immediately because even if she quits bf her LO can still keep the thrush and re infect themselves off of paci's, bottles, toys etc. The final thing that kicked our thrush was Diflucan for me and for LO but usually they prescribe Nystatin to start off and it works well for some. Also definitely a LC! Asap! The faster she addresses the issue the faster it will get resolved. It can be hard work but it is so worth rewarding.

  • Thanks ladies. It doesn't help that nearly all the women on FB posted that breastfeeding isn't meant for everyone. But in the end, it's her decision. I just wanted some info so I could try to help her a bit. :o)

Thanks again for the supportive comments!

  • Can't she just have the tongue tied clipped? It's super easy and the doc should be able to do it in the office.

  • I know someone else mentioned LaLeche League and I have to 2nd that idea. I have called them in the middle of the night crying and there has been someone there to help me. They are an amazing organization and I would highly recomend she call.
