BW ?- help with mei tei

So I got this Mei Tei (sp?) off of ebay for a $30 and I think I got what I paid for. I always feel like LO is kind of falling away from me. Here are some pics of her in front and in back. I have the straps pulled REALLY tight, and while she gets higher up and I try to bounce her back into the pouch, I still feel like she is falling away. Is this just how mei teis feel? Or am I doing something wrong? Or is it a faulty purchase and I might just have to splurge on a better mei tei? Here is a pic of her in a back carry and since her arms are out, you can't tell as much, but DH and I discussed it and he noticed the leaning away thing too. TIA!

  • Sorry the pic is so big!

  • I'm not really much help with troubleshooting mei tais, but just had to comment on your pic.  Your LO is so cute!  I actually laughed out loud at that photo, thank you Smile

ETA:  Ok I'll try.  Are the shoulder straps long enough for you to loop them back under her bum?  Or to do a lexi twist-type thing to help support her lower back and bring her in tighter?  It's also hard to tell if she's really seated well in the pouch with her knees above her bum.

  • Something to try... it looks like she is sitting with too much extra mei tai under her bum so she is not as close to you as she could be.  One thing to try with a mei tai is after you put her in, grab the straps so she is still secure and do a couple bounces while you pull the straps up so that she gets nice and snug down in there and it pulls the extra fabric up.  That should put her closer to you and help you get a more secure fit.  Does that make any sense?

Oops.  just read that you have tried the bounce.  It may just be a learning curve thing.  I would put her in front and try a few more times and see if you can get a feel for it.  I know it took me a few tries. (FWIW, I'm not a huge mei tai fan.  i can do it, but I prefer a good woven for most things!)

  • I don't have much experience, but the couple times I tried a mei tai I also felt like DS was much farther away from me than I wanted, and farther than he is in a wrap.  I tried crossing the straps over his back to sort of reinforce and pull him closer, and that helped somewhat.
  • It kind of looks like to me that she has room to slide back in her seat because her knee isn't right up agaisnt your back (but good job at getting her knees nice and high though!)  So I think if you can get the bottom of her closer to your back you'll be able to get the panel higher up on her back which might help.

When I have Grace wrapped her entire body is glued to me, she doesn't have any room to scoot side to side or back in forth in the seat.  If that makes sense.

  • Thanks for all the help ladies. I have a woven as well, I am just not comfortable getting all the fabric around LO yet (in a back carry, I wear her in the front with the woven all the time), so I have defaulted to the mei tei. It sounds like some of you had the same experience, so we will keep practicing with both the woven and mei tei.
  • Is your daughter arms out while you bounce?  it looks like she's able to ride arms out, but you might get a better seat if you tuck her arms in and bounce (so the height of the MT isn't limited by her arm pits) and then she can take her arms out afterwards.

Also, i can't tell, but are the straps crossed in front of you?  I usually like to tie my straps ruck style and end it with tibetan (like a wrap).  That spreads the body of the MT out wider and allows it to be pulled closer to you.  When the straps are narrower, the body curves out more.  You can probably find some videos on youtube on how to tie it like I described.
