can i ask another twins question?

Just out of curiosity how many ladies have concieved their twin babies without any RE assistance. It doesn't happen that often right?? Just wondering after reading the other twins post.

Re: can i ask another twins question?

  • From what I read online it is very rare to conceive twins if you haven't had fertility treatment or it doesn't run in your family. But also still possible :)

  • Age is a factor as well.  The older the mother, the chances of twins are increased.

  • I am pregnant with twins. We have had no fertility treatments and it does not run in our family. At first glance my doctor thinks they are identical.

  • I think I read too that if you are just coming off BCPs your chances are slightly increased.

There is no history of twins in my family, but MW subscribes to this theory and thinks that how/why we conceived twins with my last pregnancy.

  • I had absolutely no assistance (except charting to determine my O date). Completely spontaneous, and twins don't run in my family either. They appear to share a placenta, so they're most likely identical and we couldn't be more thrilled!

I've actually read that identical twins do not run in families - one fertilized embryo splitting to form identical twins is a random chance of nature. Fraternal twins run in families - apparently the liklihood of women producing more than one egg each cycle naturally occurs in families. Interesting stuff.

  • I beg to differ with the statement that identical twins do not run in families because my aunt had identical twins and my mom had identical twins without any fertility treatments.

  • My RE explained that each and every pregnancy has the exact same chance of becoming identical twins (1 in 250), regardless of family history.  But I've always wondered if there's a genetic link of any kind, making it any more likely.  Fraternal twins, of course, would only be linked to family if it's on the woman's side b/c she ovulated 2 eggs.

  • No treatments, no BCP before BFP, does not run in the family,.. Pretty much, we had no chance of twins. I got PG with fraternal twins, and my doctor says it's completely spontaneous and very unlikely.

I'm 22, no fertility treatment, was off bcp for 1 cycle, only 1 set of twins in my family(my great grandmother had fraternal siblings..its WAYYY out there..lol). I actually had vanishing twin syndrome though so no twins now.

true. also, if your BMI is 30 or higher, you have a higher probability of twins.

  • While we did use fertility treatments (one cycle of extremely low dose Clomid), twins do run in my family, which I think it really what did it for us.  I just got confirmation that ours are fraternal as well (two eggs, one from each ovary in my case).
