How do you sleep? Positions and leg cramping!!

I try every night to sleep on my left side. Well about after an hour of sleeping my leg starts cramping and I turn to my right side. The same thing happens, cramping on my right leg and it's time to go back to my left!

This happens all night, every night!! It isn't that easy to keep turning!!

Anyone dealing with this and have some ideas as to how to get around this?

  • This same thing happens to me.. I just toss and turn and keep a pillow between my knees and under my belly.  I've been so exhausted from work that I am able to fall asleep fairly easily though.

This. Between having contractions/cramps (not sure what to call them) for the past 4 nights, heartburn, RLP, not being able to position myself like I want, feeling like my belly is stretching to the max when I lay on either side, back pain when I lay on my back, and restless leg syndrome I haven't had a good night sleep in a very long time!

  • so...I don't sleep much now but not from leg cramps anymore.  My OB said to up my calcium intake and to stretch my hips out (yup, he said hips) and since I've been doing that I haven't had the leg cramps.  I just eat a couple of generic Viactiv candy things and do these stretches.  If I wasn't pregnant these might actually work for other bedroom 'activities' too..not just the cramping.  Wink

  • My legs don't cramp, I think because I'm still practicing Yoga (to the best of my ability!) but that doesn't mean I'm sleeping!!  My problem is my shoulder.  I get achy on my left side so I roll to the right and then my shoulder cramps so I try to roll back.  Of course the rolling hurts because my belly is huge and I have no abdominal strength to turn over.

I truly believe that I will sleep better once the baby gets here.  I might wake up with her every couple hours, but at least I will sleep for those couple hours in between!

This is what I need to do!!! Thanks for this! I have been swimming every day and stretching. Thought it would help...not so much!

  • This might be a stupid question, but have you tried upping your potassium?

I can't help you on the sleeping positions; no matter how I start out I still end up on my back somehow!

  • This is me!!! i am one hr on each side and then i have to roll over its horrible.. I get the worse leg cramps and siatica.. i am hardly sleeping AT ALL.. I have no idea what to do to get rid of it.. looks like delivery is the only cure.. I had it with ds but not as bad and as soon as with this pregnancy the only thing that solved it was delivery.

  • ok i know this sounds totally crazy but i heard it from a few different places. Take a bar of dove soap and put it inbetween your bed sheets.  I have no idea what's in the soap or why it works i just heard it does work. I don't know if you are supposed to put it up by your legs or at your feet. I imagine feet but mine didn't last to long. What worked for me was to drink more water at night. Getting up to pee was better than leg cramps.
  • Stretch a lot before you go to sleep! I find that I wake up with pain less if I stretch well at night. Good luck!
