Pregnant after IF

Subchorionic Hematoma - anyone had this?

I am just over 12 weeks (IVF) and had some bleeding that seemed to get increasingly dark in color and more in quantity. I went to the OB this past Thursday and was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma. The OB didn't seem too concerned and said just to stay on pelvic rest. Today again I had (and this is probably TMI), but I had very dark brown blood -- enough for a pantyliner. I assume this must be the clot coming out?

Anyone have this and go on to have a normal pregnancy? Does the bleeding eventually end?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: Subchorionic Hematoma - anyone had this?

  • I had a medium sized one, discovered at 6w5d.  It eventually went away by about 14 weeks - got smaller at each visit.  I was told to stay off my feet for a few days and then just take it easy.  If bleeding started again, then to just get off my feet again.  I was lucky and only had one bad bleeding episode (the first one).

There are several girls on here who have also had SCH's.  It is more common after IF treatments for some reason (my RE told me this but I forget the reasoning).

Feel better soon!  I know its really scary!

  • Great...thanks! I have been trying to stay off my feet as much as I can. And I am trying to keep positive that the dark blood is possibly the clot coming out...it is just so scary to make it this far and still have this going on.

I go for my NT scan next week so hopefully they can give me a better idea of what the SCH is doing. Thanks!

  • Yes, I had one at 9 weeks. It scared me to death. But brown blood is good. Mine only bled once so I was lucky but some bleed multiple times. Hang in there. I only stayed off my feet for one day.

  • With both of my (so far) successful pregnancies, I've had a SCH that started with bleeding at 6w that quickly resolved, but the SCH took longer to go away (on u/s)
  • I had one that was discovered at 7 weeks.  I was bleeding a lot and cramping really bad.  I ended up in the ER and was told I was probably having a m/c even though we had a u/s and saw the heart beating away.  After seeing my RE the next morning the SCH was diagnosed.  I had bright red bleeding for several days and then it turned brown.  It stopped for awhile and picked back up to pink/brown spotting until around 10 weeks.

I had weekly u/s from 7 - 12 weeks.  I never asked how large it was (it looked huge to me) because I was afraid of the answer.  At 12 weeks I was released to my OB and didn't have another u/s until 16 weeks and at that point it had appeared to have resolved.  It was confirmed that it was gone at my big u/s at 19 weeks.

I was on bedrest only when I had bright red bleeding and pelvic rest until it was confirmed that it had resolved.

It is scary and stressful to have bleeding and spotting while you're pregnant.  I hope that it resolves soon so you can relax and enjoy being pregnant!

  • I had it too. It's really common with IVF, or that's what my RE said.

Found mine at 6w with small bleeding. More blood at 8 weeks. Lots and lots of brown in between. I just mean days not a ton of brown blook. The RE assured me brown was great to see. At my OB 9w5d they didn't see anything.

Follow PP advice. It's scary, just hang in there and don't Google :)

  • Wandering over from SAIF...

I had a massive bleeding episode at 11 weeks. Didn't get an u/s until 12 weeks (It was three days before Christmas, I'd been released from my RE, and hadn't seen my OB yet. Niiiice.) We also did IVF.

Anyway, mine was huge, and looked like it was going to eat the baby. I bled again on Christmas day and spotted dark brown for a full month afterward. I was pretty much on pelvic rest the whole pregnancy and modified bedrest for two months (I didn't have to stay in bed but had to stay off my feet as much as possible.). In my case, it didn't clear up completely until 26 weeks. I did have a bit of placental resistance at that u/s as well that kept me with my peri until 35 weeks, but it never showed up again and the baby never had any issues from it, which is what they were watching for.

She was almost 10 pounds when she was born at 40 weeks, so clearly we didn't have any of the IUGR they were worried might happen!

Brown is definitely good. It's old blood.

  • I had an SCH as well. My first episode of bleeding was around 6w3d and it was pink/red blood that I first saw on my panty liner and on the TP when I went to the bathroom. About an hour or so later it was gone. At my next u/s (7w1d) they diagnosed the SCH, which they said was pretty small. I had about 4 or 5 episodes total of bleeding and then they just stopped around 9wks. Each episode lasted about an hour or so, and I would just make sure to sit with my feet up and drink plenty of fluids.

  • I had 6 or 7 SCH's - never a clot that came out, just a lot of heavy spotting or bleeding. As long as the blood is old (i.e. dark) and you have no cramping don't worry about it. They resolve themselves! GL!
  • We just discovered a SCH at my last ultrasound (7w1d), but the doctor wasn't that concerned saying that they typically resolve themselves on their own. Good luck!
