I'm not to that point yet, but Dr. has mentioned it twice. I'd like LO to come on his own, but I know there is a point. I was just wondering what I should expect?
So what was your experience with your scheduled induction? Do you just set a time and walk in, they hook you up to pit and you just start labor? How long did it take? Can you get up and move? Was the baby constantly monitored? Were you dialated, effaced, etc. at all to begin with? Did everything turn out okay? This sounds like 20 questions but these are things that go through me head. I plan on asking all these questions if DR brings it up again, but I was just wondering your experience?
Re: For those of you who have been induced.....
I was induced after failing a NST. I was not dilated or effaced at all so they used Cervadil to ripen my cervix. It took 2 days. I was monitored on and off until I went into labor.
It was 4 years ago so I don't remember the exact time increments but I think it was an hour on and then an hour off the monitors. When on the monitors you need to stay very still for accurate readings, but I was able to be up and about half the time.
My midwife briefly mentioned that if I'm favorable she might suggest an induction because my bp has been elevated from time to time at my appts. I'm doing 24 hr urine collection and will find out on Tuesday what the results are.
My sister was induced and everything went really well for her. From start to finish it took about 10 hours. She was monitored at all times because as the upped the pictocin they wanted to make sure the baby was adjusting okay. She didn't seem to mind hanging out in her bed/room all day.
If my midwife does suggest inducing I will be asking lots of questions. Honestly I'm so close to my due date I'm hoping this LO comes out on it's own
May I ask why your Dr is already talking about inductions?

He didn't really give me a reason as to why, he just seems to feel like I'll go over. He asked me how comfortable I was going over. Nothing is wrong with the baby at all he's "within range" based on fundal height. I have had no problems. Its almost like I really don't even need to be at these appointments because I never feel like I've gained anything from them. The dr. himself is kinda odd, he tried to give me my prental paperwork to take to the hospital twice (2 separate appointments) and I had to remind him I already had it. I also had to remind him to tell me what my CF test result was and my Strep B result at two separate appointments. He also asked me to create a birth plan to talk about at a following appointment, and he hasn't brought it up since. We wrote out a specific plan, but I hesitate to "pass" it out to the staff because I heard sometimes they don't take you seriously.....or the situation could change. I do really appreciate the knowledge I gained from the research we had to do writing it though. So if anything, I'll just know "this is what I want" and distribute this information as the time becomes necessary.
In response to your last paragraph, I know how you feel. DH JUST started a new job after months of looking, and of course he isn't eligible for any time off yet. He asked them if he could have 2-3 days when the baby was born, and they said they would rather have him start after the baby is born than him just take 2-3 days off after he started. Well, that was a while ago when I had more and a month to go and we REALLY needed him to start work ASAP because the savings was dwindling and he needed the insurance waiting period to start ASAP. I mean, there is a new baby coming....
Anyways, he's very worried he's going to miss his birth, because unless LO is born on a weekend or after 6pm, he will. It worries me to. Its been an odd situation and everyone in the family keeps asking us "well, what are you gonna do about it?" which doesn't make it any easier.
I was induced with my first at 41w3d. They gave me Cytotec to start with (just say no to Cytotec, it's a very dangerous drug for pregnant women) and about eight hours later started the Pitocin. I was in hard labor for about 12 hours total. I wasn't able to get up and move. I was 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced when I went in. I never made it past 7 cm before I ended up having a C-section for failure to progress.
I was not happy with my experience and I don't ever recommend induction to anyone unless there is a REAL medical reason. You haven't even reached your due date yet, so I'm not sure why your doc keeps bringing it up.
I was induced this past Thursday - and honestly it was a great experience. I was 3 cm, 75%, -2 station when I went in.
Went in, took vitals, placed monitors to check baby's HR and to check if I'm having contractions. Nurse went through a ton of questions (took more than an hour, but it seemed like my nurse was slow).
Got my IV, started on fluids, peniciilin (GBS+), and pitocin at 9:45 am. Doctor came in a few minutes later and broke my water. Had a few contractions but nothing regular. Upped the dosage of pitocin. After a while, feeling contractions a little more, and went ahead and got the epidural at that point. After the epidural, they upped the pitocin more. I was checked around 1:00 pm, and had made just a little progress. Upped the pitocin more, continued to monitor my contractions, as well as baby's reactions to contractions. I was checked around 4:00 pm, and was pretty much ready to go. The nurse had me do a practice push, and they were like "it is time to call the doctor!" One set of pushes with the nurses (w/o the doctor), and the head was already there. One more set of pushes once the doctor got there, and he was out at 4:35. With my epidural, I wasn't in pain, but could feel enough to push.
With all that said, my water broke on my own with my first pregnancy, but I didn't have any productive contractions, and ended up on pitocin. My experience wasn't quite as good, although I wouldn't call it "bad" either.
I didn't have a planned induction, but was induced after a NST because I was past my due date, had a terrible pregnancy rash, and an open capillary on my face (haha, total circus clown here!!!). I had been 2cm, and 90% effaced for a few weeks at that point, so they started me on Cervadil to help me progress at 9pm Monday. At 8:30 am, I had made it to 4cm, but contractions weren't starting so I took my last walk, went to the bathroom, and got hooked up. They started pitocin at 9:30am, got my epidural at 12:30pm, delivered at 9:43pm Tuesday. It was a long day not being able to get up and move around... but overall not too bad.
My experience would have been better, but the nurse ordered more epi when I was ready to push... so I didn't have the right sensation to do anything and was pushing all wrong. So they had me wait it out. I pushed for 2 hours, the doctor told me it was time to start thinking about a c-section... in my head I thought "I'll be damned if I worked this hard to just give up and let you take the baby out of me!!!" So I ignored him and pushed like hell for another 20 min. and then my heart melted and it was all worth it. Until it was time to push out the placenta... but I like to just forget about that whole thing!
I still think this time I would rather go past my due date 2 weeks before considering another induction, unless something was wrong. It was nice not having that panic of having strong contractions and getting to the hospital, making sure I had everything, etc. but I would like to see if I went into labor naturally, if the pain was more manageable... some say it is, but who knows!
