3rd Trimester

feet swelling and preeclampsia

okay. maybe I'm just paranoid. that's for you all to decide.  I'm 34.5 wks and have had some minor swelling of my feet thus far.  Starting yesterday, they my feet/ankles/calves have swolllen about 20 times their size (ok not that much, but a very noticeably amount more).  Theyr'e quite painful and hard to walk around.  I plan on calling my dr first thing tomorrow, but I was looking online and saw that sudden swelling can be a sign of preeclampsia.  I was at the dr on Tuesday, and everything was fine.  BP was 100/58.  Does preeclampsia come on just like that?

Re: feet swelling and preeclampsia

  • I'm not sure how it works for everyone, but I had moderate swelling and a good BP until my appointment a few weeks ago, but then my BP skyrocketed for one appointment (I was stressed that day, almost late, all that jazz...) so they did a urine test and said I wasn't at risk. This last appt my BP went down, so they haven't done anything else about it...

The swelling has increased a lot in the past week (no more wedding rings for me), so I'm in the same boat as you, wondering if it could have come on suddenly, but since the test was negative, I'm holding out hope that it's just water retention......

  • At 36 weeks, I noticed an increased amount of swelling in my legs and feet and I took my BP and it was up. When I called they made me come in just to get checked, they ran labs, but everything is fine. It's always better to call and be safe then sorry. GL!
  • Yeah, I've had very noticeable swelling in my feet, calves, and ankles for a few weeks now, and my blood pressure has always been fine.
  • I had awful swelling with my daughter and everything was fine.  Do not get nervous.  Just drink a lot of water...more than you think you need and put your feet up as much as you can.
  • The same happened to me.  One day the swelling was normal, the next, WHOA.  Elephant feet and legs.  I think it just comes with the extra weight and pressure from the baby in this last, home stretch.

Don't worry, but do check and make sure.  It can be a sign of pre-e, but isn't always.  Best of luck!

  • I'm not sure the answer to your question but wanted to add that most grocery stores (with a pharmacy) and most drug stores have the "self-serve" BP machines. I use them about once a week. My doc says this is the best way to keep an eye on my BP.

I do it 2 or 3 times to get an average Smile

  • It can, but not usually.

If it were to come on that fast you would also have swelling in your face and hands, severe headaches, vision issues etc.

I started with high BP at 28 weeks. I was diagnosed with just PIH. Pregnancy Induced Hypertension.

At 33 weeks it got worse with swelling and super high bp readings.

oh I forgot my bio has my enture pre-e story. It may help to read it instead o me  typing it out! Click on my name and it'll bring up my bio.

I think you are probably OK. Headaches were my first sign, and hand and face swelling. good luck!
