Sleeping on side / tummy

Easton is starting to sleep on his side and tummy. I know it's not the end of the world- but I secretly wish he would sleep on his back. Every time my husband or I try to turn him, he wakes up and is NOT happy with us. ( I guess I wouldn't be either if someone woke me up)

I know I can't stand there all night and move him to his back...Would you be overly concerned about this? My husband is SOO worried about it that it's starting to freak me out. I have more of the attitude that while it's best to sleep on his back, he's obviously comfortable on his side or tummy.

Re: Sleeping on side / tummy

  • He is fine... let him sleep. :)

Editing here:  We are conditioned by society to worry over every little thing.  Remember in 1st and 2nd tri all of the posts OMG I woke up on my back.. did I kill my baby?  If he is more comfy on his side or tummy then that is jut how he is more comfy.  My DS is more comfy on his tummy or side and I want to flip him to his tummy or side if he flips to his back because I know he will wake up.  Talk about irony.

  • He is almost 7 months old.  The risk of SIDS lowers after 6 months!  If he has good movement he will be fine :-)  DD is a tummy sleeper.  I have gone in every night for the past month and rolled her over because she is on her tummy and she is uncovered.  So I readjust her.  And for a month she  has been waking up in the middle of the night because when I move her she wakes up. Then she gets up at 6:15am!  So for the last 3 nights I have not moved her and sure enough she does not cry out in the middle of the night nor does she wake up early.  I have been waking her to leave the house at 7:45!  WOO HOO!  GL!  He will be fine :-)

  • DS has always been more comfortable on his side, but has recently rolled to tummy during the night - he sleeps much better.  I don't think there is much you can do once they start doing this on their own.  We just let him sleep.  My DH is like yours though, he is super worried about it too.
  • Once they start rolling around there's really not much you can do.  Like jessicada said, the risk of SIDS goes down so much after 6 months.  Eli has always been a side/tummy sleeper.  I would put him down on his back since you're more comfortable with that, and then just let him be.

  • DS started sleeping on his tummy when he was 2 weeks old.  I was scared to death, but his pedi said it was fine and once he started rolling there was nothing I could do about it.  At daycare he has to sleep on his back, but if he rolls over they leave him be.  He sleeps so much better and won't fall alseep on his back no matter what now.

  • DD is more comfortable and sleeps better on her side/stomach. Her pedi said that was perfectly fine (at her 6mo visit) and there was really nothing I could do to stop her. ;) At this point, they have enough control to move their head if they can't breathe properly..I worried the first couple of nights because DD would lay w/ her face straight down, but pedi said even that was ok and she would probably stop doing that, which she did. Now I just lay her down on her back and she immediately rolls to her side or stomach and falls asleep.

  • DD started tummy sleeping around 7mos and she loves it and sleeps more soundly.. I'am still not wild about it!! But i can't keeping flipping her every hour!!
  • DD just started tummy sleeping on her own. She sleeps fine so I don't worry. You shouldnt' either, let the boy sleep! He's comfortable and happy.
  • At this age, there is very little risk of side/tummy sleeping unless your child has breathing/medical issues.  My son is a side sleeper and if he is comfortable that way then so be it.

  • try not to stress about this. One of the reasons SIDS decreases after 6 months is because they are able to move and roll around. Don't turn him over, you are just disrupting his sleep pattern which is not good either. Imagine if you got moved around in your sleep. DS started sleeping on his tummy at 5 months and DR ok'd because the risk then was even low and he slept much better and as to quote her, "babies need good sleep to help their brain grow."
  • My son also began to prefer sleeping on his side at 4 months (he's 7mo now). The pediatrician assured me that if he's rolling himself onto his side, he can roll back and not to worry. If you're really freaked out, I recommend the monitor I have that has an alarm that goes off if the child stops breathing (it detects movement with a sensor pad under the mattress). It's the Bebe Sounds Angelcare monitor and it was about $129. It has given me great peace of mind.
  • I love you girls! I knew it wasn't as big of a deal as I figured. I am sending this to my husband so he can stop making me freak out!
  • DD loves to sleep on her side . .we have never rolled her back, because she can roll back if needed. ?once they can roll, there is not much you can do. .i've seen dd on the video monitor with her head in the mattress and so far she is still here. ?
