Follow up to elimination diet/food sens. questions

Thanks to those that responded to my last post -- it was helpful.  Just curious -- what were your LO's symptoms of food sensitivity. With soy this week, it was obvious -- greenish stools and blood in the stools.  If I've eliminated soy and her stools are no longer green or bloody, should I bother testing out dairy?  Are there other symptoms of sensitivities?  She is a very fussy baby and a poor sleep which is why I ask.  Thanks again for the responses!

  • I try to avoid most dairy or else he gets really gassy/fussy as he's gotten older though it doesn't bother him as much.

  • DDs main reaction is her mood. Sometimes when I eat dairy, she has mucousy stools, sometimes she doesn't. But she always reacts by screaming a lot. So I would still give dairy a shot, if I were you.

  • Thanks!  That is what I was hoping to hear.  I will give dairy a shot for these next couple of weeks.  Definitely worth it if I'll get a happier baby!

  • I asked my pedi GI about testing dairy; we definitely reacted to soy, and I asked if I should try dairy.  He said he's seen kids allergic to dairy that aren't allergic to soy, but he's never seen one allergic to soy that's not allergic to dairy, so I shouldn't challenge it yet.

DS's symptoms were: extremely fussy/colicky, frequent, painful gas (with a rock hard tummy), increased spit up, super clingy, not gaining weight, and blood and mucous in stool.

  • I would probably ask the pedi to test a poopy diaper for blood (sometimes you can't see it) and if all clear and no green/mucus in stool, gas or fussiness feel good that soy was the only problem.  My guess is the fussy baby and poor sleep (if consistent) indicates another food sensitivity. Even though DS's stool is now clear, I still eliminated caffeine because I think it doesn't agree with him.  GL sorting it all out!
