Ab exercises?

I was at the gym yesterday and using a couple of the ab machines, for crunches and twists...  It struck me today though that maybe they aren't the best for pregnancy.   I tried looking up what ab workouts are good for pregnancy, but I haven't seemed to find any clear answer.

What do you think, what are you girls doing?

 Thanks :)

Re: Ab exercises?

  • From the beginning of my pregnancy, my doctor said that exercise was fine - but NO ab exercises. I have heard other stories from other women here whose doctors gave them the green light, however.

If I were you, I'd a member of the gym staff or your doctor what you CAN do.

  • I heard you could do them, but moderately.  I go to natal water aerobics, we use the noodles to do some ab exersices, and my instructor makes sure we never focus on ABs for too long.
  • My Dr cleared me for everything, but I have reduced the ab exercises quite a bit.

  • Doctors used to dis-allow ab exercises. The ACOG has said you could do them for about 13 years now. I did everything but really deep twists, and I didn't lie on my stomach or flat on my back after 20 weeks.
  • I agree that there's conflicting advice about sit-ups and abdominal work. My MW described herniated abdominals in an effort to show me a benefit in laying off.

That said, I am still doing crunches and exercises that target core, but just not a ton of them... I figure my body will let me know when it's time to lay off for the rest of the pregnancy. Who knows,... could be tomorrow!

I am actually finding pushups to be an exercise that I feel in my core (a pulling in my upper abs from the body tension). So who knows what will feel 'weird' or uncomfortable for you... IMO, don't overdue anything, stay aware, and feel your way through it.
