3rd Trimester

Is there any way to "prep" for the 3 hour glucose test?

I failed the first (slightly...) and am doing the 3 hour on Wednesday.  Wondering if anyone on here did anything different before the second test that might help.

Thanks!

  • the only thing i did differently was not eat anything morning of and did the test as early as possible.

  • I "prepped" for it by researching my original test results and asking for a modified 1 hr test. I refused to do the 3 hr test because I knew it would make me sick for a good 3 days and bring on a migraine.

I passed the modified test with no issues and no changes to my diet.

  • I fasted for 8 hours...i still failed the one hour, but passed at the two hour marker...so ::Shrug::

but my original 1 hour I failed by a LOT..lol

  • I think it's something that you either have or you don't for the most part.  If you have it, you need to know that you have it.  Stick with foods that are low on the glycemic index and eat a combination of carbs and proteins regularly.

I barely failed the one-hour and also failed the three-hour.  I didn't find either test bad to take at all.

  • I am going to quote another bumpie from a previous post about "prepping" for the GD test. Find someone else who doesn't have GD and swap placentas with them. There is no reason to TRY to pass it. If you have it, you have it and you need to know.

  • Thanks...and very true about needing to know if you have it.  I've had other friends tell me that their ob/gyns said to not eat carbs a few days prior to the test, so was mainly wondering if anyone else did something similar.  Appreciate the replies!!
  • unfortunately no.. other than mentally preparing yourself to get jabbed 3 times. But don't worry - most people who fail the 1 hr pass the 3 hr. I did! There's hope!
  • I failed my one hour- but I didn't know I would be taking it that day and ate some cinnamon toast crunch before, then passed the 3 hour- not even close to high levels at all- that was at 14 weeks and I had no idea why but my dr wanted me to take it. She had me do another 3 hour last week and I passed again :)  Kaiser has you fast for atleast 10 hours, but I agree with the others that you need to know if you have it and yes it would be a bummer to fail but if you do have it you can make sure your taking care of it :)

3 times? They jabbed me 5 times!

OP, either you have it or you don't. If you do have it then you need to know and take care of it. If there was a way to "prep" and trick the test then you wouldn't be doing yourself or your LO any favors.

  • My dr's office recommended I stay away from anything too sugary or super high carb for about a day before my 1 hour test with both pregnancies and that worked for me. I agree with others that you need to know if you have GD but no need to raise false concerns b/c you downed Skittles on your test day either. I think my dr has you fast before the 3 hour test so check ... I would definitely go for a high protein regimen the day in advance. On the day I did my 1 hour, there was a poor girl who was pretty sick doing the 3 hour test. The tech said it just depends on your body and how you react...if you react poorly to eating a lot of sugar or not eating regularly, plan to lie down and just rest during the test and know it may not be your best day. Good luck!
  • Mine is tomorrow and I'm not doing anything differently today. No food or water (HATE!) until after the test tomorrow morning. I fully expect to feel like crap but I also think I will pass it. I can't be sure, but I got a 139 on the first test without fasting beforehand and most doctors use 140 as the cut-off so I would have passed most tests, but my doctor uses a more conservative cut-off.

    Here goes nothing!
