3rd Trimester

Sibling vent {longish}

I am so frustrated with my younger brother.  He's part of the entitlement generation - you know, the ones who want everything handed to them?  Quick background: he moved to TX to finish school, left school to go to the police academy and got hired on with a PD.  The girl he was with caused all sorts of issues and he eventually got fired because he called out of work 2-4 times a week.  From there he was supposed to go back to school, enrolled and then left again.  Since then he's been hopping from one job to another.

He got married last October to a girl who has a 4 yr old and their baby was born in July.  On Thursday he called me and at one point mentioned getting a new phone.  I thought they had just gotten new phones and he told me no, his is 6 months old and hers is 3 months old and she hates it.  They spent about $300 on these phones!!  Now they are looking at at least another $100 each.  In the same conversation he proceeds to complain that they have no money and no life and how he's been cheated out of a promotion. Blah blah blah.  I reminded him that DH and I were in a hole and we dug ourselves out and now have no debt besides the cars and the house.

Then he starts in on me about how DH makes more than he does - I reminded him that DH has his degree and worked his butt off to get where he is.  He went off on me about how I have a degree but look at where I am.  Yeah, I work at a childcare, but I also have a government contract as a writer!  I choose to work at the gym to get my social butt out of the house!  Then came the fun part - the whining about how he made a mistake and everyone in the family is more successful than him etc.

Now, I just looked on FB and saw that not only does his step daughter have one of those portable DVD players, but there is another one up in front of the baby!!!! OMG! First of all, that's dangerous - it's a projectile in the event of an accident.  I called my mom (since I'm so fed up and not talking to him right now) and told her to call him and tell him to take it down.  Why a 2 month old needs a DVD player in the car I can't figure out but anyway.... if they have no money why are they buying so many toys??  UGH!!! I want to scream with the frustration of it all!!!  We worked hard to be out of debt by the time this baby comes... and even then I know it will still be hard!  Why do some people feel they are entitled to handouts when the rest of us bust for it??

Thanks if you made it this far - I just really needed to vent.

  • Ugh... I know how that is. At least he's not asking for money from you yet! That gets old quick. Any time he mentions money, just say that he's gotten himself where he is in life and that's all there is to it!

    My sis is much like him, but she's not entitled... she just gives everyone else everything! Great woman, but she spends money like nobody's business. Then she'll ask me buy something for her and she'll pay me back in a few days once payday comes!! What?!? Is it that good of a deal?

  • I can't stand people who b*tch left and right that they have no money. They're usually the worst spenders. We have friends who are complaining that they may lose their house, but they bought their kids new video games and laptops and got a dog, etc. Then they told us, we have to come over so we can see their new patio set. They just didn't like their old one because it was plastic. I asked DH if they were keeping the house since they're still buying stuff and he just shrugged. We don't even have a patio set because we found out about LO and all our extra money is going into the bank.

    I have a friend like that too... a couple actually.  It is frustrating.  Especially when I hear about people making big purchases on credit cards right before the declare bankruptcy.  We could have easily declared bankruptcy what with over $60,000 in debt that accumulated when one or both of us were unemployed... but we didn't!!  We paid it ALL off!!  I hate eating on the cheap, but you do what you have to do right?

  • Um.... more distressing than the money is the fact that very young children who are exposed to TV regularly have a much higher chance of developing ADD by age 5.  The AAP recommends no screened media of any kind until after age 2.
