distracted by Dad...

So LO has become a distractababy. I tried a nursing necklace that she can play with while nursing but that distracts her too. Most days it's just me and her and I can get her to eat pretty well if there's no noise.

On the weekends or days DH is off work though she won't eat for more than 5 minutes at a time and it's usually closer to 2 minutes. She's constantly turning her head and looking for DH. Sometimes we can get her to eat by having DH sit next to us so she can stare at him while she eats but it doesn't always work.

DH took the next 9 days off which is awesome but I'm kind of worried about her short feedings. I don't really know what to do. She does still have plenty of wet diapers, should I just not worry about it?

  • If she's still producing plenty of wet diapers, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  She may just be going through a 'grazing' period, where you may notice that she's nursing for shorter time periods, but more often.  She should eat when she's hungry.  Just stay on the lookout for her hungry cues, and feed her whenever you think she'll eat.

I LOVE the quilt she's lying on in your pic, by the way!  Where did you get it?

Thanks Mama! I think I have a tendency to over worry because I've never done this before. Smile

Anyhoo the quilt I got on Etsy from a seller called yorkpatty. Etsy is awesome!

  • Max started doing the same thing around that age. DH would leave the room so he'd be less distracted, but pretty much anything was a distraction. M still got plenty to eat, but he was/is a bad sleeper and I wanted to make sure he was FULL at bedtime so he'd wake less often. I'd spend quite awhile nursing him lying in bed in a dark room before bedtime. That really helped with distractions, esp. when he was tired (but now that he's super-mobile, he just crawls all over me. It's not working so well anymore!)

Thanks! She still eats really well when she's tired right before bed and if she wakes during the night, I guess I should be grateful for that. Smile

  • I'm "harsh" about this...I give Bunny 3 "prairie dogs" (where his head pops up to look around and my nipple is either forgotten or taken along for the ride) and then I unlatch and put it away. When he's hungry he'll come back to it and focus.

(I put harsh in "" up there because there are days where I still feel like I might as well be topless and I do let him nurse as frequently as he likes - which keeps us all happier.)

  • This is exactly what had been happening with us.

So I've switched to nursing Sky in bed when we're home. If dad's home, we nurse in bed with the door shut! Every time!

It's helped a lot, but I don't know how we'll do it if we go places! Huh?

  • DS is doing this too!!  It's driving me crazy.  I tried putting a blanket over us, but then he pulled off to look at the airplanes on his blanket, oy.  He only eats well in the quiet, and it's best if it's dark too.  Like pp said, in bed, close door.

  • Yeah we might just have to try the in bed thing. I really hope this is a phase that she'll grow out of. I really love nursing her when she actually eats. Confused
