Potentially dumb question: wall art above the crib

I have three framed pieces of wall art I planned to hang on the same wall that my crib is on. Now that I see the crib in the room, I'm wondering if this is a giant safety hazard...i.e. if there is potential for the frames to fall off the wall and fall in the crib. Part of me says that a) they will be securely anchored to the wall and b) we can pull the crib out from the wall so it's not directly under the frames...but the other part of me says I didn't think this through before setting up my nursery "plan." Any helpful guidelines/info on what, if anything, could be used as decor on the wall behind/above a crib?

Re: Potentially dumb question: wall art above the crib

  • as long as you've hung them properly they won't fall down on their own.. once LO gets big enough to reach up and hit/pull/play with the art it might be another story.  if it's something particularly heavy you might want to avoid it or at least hang it high enough LO won't be able to reach.  if it's something relatively lightweight, like canvas, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I just recently moved to California from NY, and after experiencing my first earthquake, I have opted to avoid placing any hanging items above the crib (save for the mobile)... I figure you can never be too safe. I don't know if you're planning on doing any wall art, cling-on designs, etc, but that might be a good choice for the crib behind the wall.
  • I do have a piece of artwork above the crib, but it is painted on a very lightweight canvas.  I have the crib about 5 inches away from the wall and the canvas is probably a half inch -1 inch thick.  I also have it pretty much dug into the nail head (if that makes sense).  I wouldn't hang anything heavy above the crib and I would definitely make sure there is a good distance between crib and wall.  Not a dumb question at all!
  • I'll also add, I would avoid anything with glass!  Now, if you are in an area where you experience earthquakes...well that's another whole story.
  • I wasn't worried about things falling as much as little one grabbing them. So I went with a rub on wall decal over the crib and hung the other art around the room. As long as they're secure, and high enough for LO not to reach, it should be fine.

  • I've overly paranoid about this, so we are just having a wall decal on the wall above the crib, if anything at all. We have all of our pictures and other wall hanging on the other walls. We have hung a picture before in another room, and THOUGHT it was super secure, but it fell.

  • The earthquake issue is exactly why I thought this could be a hazard. Stupid San Francisco! :) They are some fabric appliques that I framed, so there is glass on the frame itself - probably better to be safe than sorry. I'll put them on another wall.
  • I had my u/s pictures blown up to about 8 by 10 and was planning on hanging them above the crib but also thought that they could potentially fall on my LO so I just decided to hang them on another wall rather than risk them falling on LO or even just falling into the crib and potentially getting glass all in the crib. I hung them pretty well but still didn't want to risk it.

  • i dont think its a dumb question.  actually, i was wondering the same exact question actually lol.  but i think better safe than sorry so i wont be hanging my 3 picture frames on the wall above the crib.
  • In California, I wouldn't risk it.  We're in LA, and not planning on hanging anything near the cribs.  The San Andreas is overdue for a big one, and I'm a disaster preparedness dork.  :)

  • We did it - we hung a lightweight canvas above our crib.  It's secured very well to the wall.  When he is able to reach it, we may consider moving it.

  • We're not hanging any art over the cribs themselves because of earthquake danger.
