Baby Names

Lane or Laine?

for a girl's name...my grandma;s name is Elaine, and my mom's name ends in -lane, so if we go with this name to honor them, i could go either way.  Which is the better spelling?

Re: Lane or Laine?

  • I don't know which is the proper spelling, but I would look at Laine and think it was Lain-ee. Maybe that is just me though.

  • My daughter's middle name is Laine - it's after my MIL whose maiden name was McClain. Lain is a nod to "McLain" and I added the "e" because it seemed more feminine to me than Lain. I feel that way about Lane too - seems like a masculine form.
  • I like Laine better :)

  • I think either is fine; it's just a matter of your personal preference. Personally, I like simpler names, so I'd go with just Lane.
  • Laine is better. I think Lane looks like a boy's name!

  • I think they're both really pretty!  Laine looks a little more feminine and cute while Lane seems a little more modern?  just my opinion.

  • I prefer Laine. Lane I've seen for boys, and it just makes me think of Road, Street, etc. Laine to me has a little more personality as a name. (Kind of like Paige versus Page.)

  • My maiden name is Lane and I named my daughter Chloe Lane.  However, I think the spelling should all depend on what is personal to you.
  • I vote Laine.

I see Lane as a word-name, while Laine is more of a surname-turned-first-name. I think Laine appears more feminine and, since I always prefer longer names, I think it is nicer.

  • I worked with a guy named Lane. Laine seems more feminine to me.

I like the way your honoring your mother and grandmother. Very cool.

I feel the "i" in it make it more feminine.

  • for a girl...laine.
  • I much prefer Lane.

  • To me, Lane is a boy's name  Think Lane Meyer--if you're not familiar.. I'm too old!

  • I like Laine, because I think of Lane as the masculine version. Plus, the nn Lainey makes more sense with the Laine spelling (if you're planning on using the nn). Laney works, but that kind of looks like LANN-ney.

Laine was our original choice for a girl (not sure why we decided against it; it just sort of disappeared off our list one day).  We swore we wouldn't tell anyone why, but no one here knows us in real life so I'm safe: he is a huge Seinfeld fan, and loves when they call Elaine "Lainey," and there is a character named Laine in the Baby-Sitters Club series, which was a huge part of my childhood. Silly, I know, but that's why we chose the spelling.

Also, I am a teacher and all the Lanes I have met have been boys (granted, only 3 of them).

  • Lane is my middle name & my husband's middle name too! Needless to say we're both 100% for the name & with that spelling. Our 1st born (boy or girl) will have Lane as middle name.
