artifical sweeteners?

Are they ok in moderation?  Is one worse than another?  I seemed to remember to stay away from saccharine (sp) but aspertame (sp) is not bad.  I could very well be imagining that, my pregnancy brain has rendered my memory basically non-existent!

Thanks for your help, ladies!

Re: artifical sweeteners?

  • My ob said artificial sweetener is more of an issue for children who are outside the womb (lol) - that the amount absorbed if you drink a little bit of diet soda will be miniscule. I might have a diet caffeine-free soda every week or so as a treat, but try not to make it a regular thing. Yesterday I got lunch at Panera and discovered that they cary caffeine free diet pepsi at their soda fountain - after so much plain water, I was so excited!

  • I try to limit my intake of artificial sweeteners. I try to get stuff that has splenda in it. I don't know if that's any better, but I like it

  • My OB suggested alternating between artificial sweeteners and regular sugar when it comes to things like coffee and soda.

  • My doctor said it's okay to use sparingly.  Online I've read that saccharine has been shown to cause birth defects (I don't recall in what amount) so you should stay away from it completely; aspartame seems fine but still use in moderation; and that not enough research has been done on Splenda so it should be used sparingly.

I probably have a caffeine free diet drink (aspartame) once every couple weeks, give or take.

  • My doctor told me what you mentioned...stay away from saccharine but aspartame is OK in moderation. I have one packet of Splenda per day in my one cup of coffee that I drink. The doctor said that's fine.
