flu/h1n1 vaccine
sorry if this has been posted before. I was wondering if anyone is getting the seasonal and h1n1 vaccine. My doctor was trying to get me to take it on my last visit but i said i'd think about it till next time. I really do not see the point of taking it now when i have 3 weeks to go. I would much rather wait. Especially considering i already had the swine flu, therefore i shouldn't get it again. I was planning on getting only the regular vaccine but only after delivery. I'm very skeptical as last time i did have the swine flu and all the medication, i did have a MC.
Anyone else's doc recommended it at this point?

From what I understand, all flu shots this year will include h1n1.
Per the CDC:
The seasonal flu vaccine protects against three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against 2009 H1N1, and two other influenza viruses (an H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus).

I forgot to ask when my MW gave me the vaccine two weeks ago.
any flu that you already have had you cannot get again, unless it mutates and changes which it does, hence the reason for a flu shot every year. But the same exact flu you cannot get twice since when you have the first time your body forms antibodies against it. Now if the H1N1 is different this year then last then more then likely you can get it twice.
The reason why i'm skeptical is because i know several doctors around me that do not recommend it and have not had their children take it either. Also if i had listened to every doctor during my pregnancy i would have been taking daily shots for the past 3 months, but because i trusted my body and myself about how i felt, i have had 0 problems without any of the drugs they suggested i take. I guess that makes me a bad patient
I would consider taking the vaccine if i still had a few months to go and with the flu season coming up, but since i only have a couple of weeks, then i'm very tempted to wait. The only thing that makes me think twice about it, is the fact that it does protect your baby for the first few months. But the scary part to that is that it does get to the baby... i have never had a flu vaccine ever... so i also don't know if have any allergic reaction to it.
Of course! DH & I got ours two weeks ago. Please read up on the science/facts instead of listening to misinformed OWT/others. Definitely get a flu shot unless you have an egg/other medical allergy to it.
The flu shot is made from the DEAD virus (the nasal spray contains some live parts of the virus & is not given to pg women). When you get the flu shot, your body creates antibodies against the flu virus/antigens. The antibodies are passed to your baby via the placenta & your breastmilk. You are giving antibodies to a baby who lacks them. If baby is exposed to the virus, s/he has the antibodies to protect him/herself. If not, baby will likely get sick (possibly very sick/die depending on other health issues). Not trying to be dramatic, but it's a serious concern that's preventable.
Ok - I'm the odd one out. I'm not getting the flu shot. If I had the option of getting just the regular flu shot than i would - but I do not want the H1N1. Plus - my body does better when i don't get the flu shot. When I get it, I'm out for 3 or more days. In the past 4 years of not getting it I've had a 24 hour bug and that's all.
Of course, I will be asking my MW about this on Monday to double check but so far it hasn't been brought up.
i'm sure this is a little over dramatic to say the least since most babies do not get sick and die. The reason for my questioning is because i HAVE read the facts.
If you do get the flu after birth would you want to be separated from your baby because I don't see what else you could do. That is why my husband and I got them as well as anyone who wants to be around her, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents...etc.

Actually, if you're breastfeeding and you get sick, you are supposed to keep nursing.
I am absolutely getting it before LO arrives so I can go ahead and build up the antibodies and pass them on to her - she will be born right at the beginning of flu season and will not be able to get innoculated herself until she is 6 months old.
Not only do my doctors recommend it, but my 3 pediatrician friends (one of whom is an epidemiologist for the CDC) very highly recommend it, the flu (both types) can be incredibly dangerous for infants. We also made all of our immediate family get it.
I am totally NOT one to get these shots, but I have already scheduled my appointment to get both (they're in one shot this year I guess). As someone already said, I think that also helps to give immunity to the baby, and since I'll be around the baby the most during cold & flu season, I figured it was the best idea to go ahead and get it this year. I'm also thinking about having DH and my stepson get it too, just so we're all covered with LO...
And if your doc has recommended it, I would go ahead and do it. I understand that you're concerned about the baby since the last time you had one, you had a MC, but you're super far along at this point, AND there's no telling why exactly you MC. It may have had nothing at all to do with the shot.
I asked my Dr at my last appointment, and she said the immunity from a flu shot is not at all passed to the baby. I'm curious as to all the conflicting information out there.
That said... the vaccine makes me very sick, so I'll wait til maternity leave to do it.
