Compression Stockings: Knee High or Thigh High?

I have some varicose veins (from pre-pregnancy) that I don't want to get worse so my doctor recommended compression stockings. She said I could get either the knee high or the thigh high but warned me that as I get further along, I might have trouble putting the thigh high ones on (since my belly will be in the way). Anyone have any experience with this? Since the veins are on the back of my knees, it would seem that the thigh high would be more effective, but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

  • My OB won't let me wear knee high ones because of the increased Risk of blood clots. I wear thigh highs and have no problem with them.

  • I would get the knee-highs, they stay up better and won't drive you crazy having to pull them up a million times.  If you really think about it, it makes sense, every time you bend your knee you pull them down a little.

I'm high-risk b/c of previous blood clots and pulmonary embolism.. I have never, ever heard from any of my doctors (and I go to a sh!t ton of them) that knee highs cause blood clots.  In fact, my hematologist (the blood doctor) prescribed knee highs for me following the PE.  It's important to measure your legs as described on the back of the package and to follow those measurements, too big and they won't do any good.  Too small and you won't wear them because they're uncomfortable.  Also make sure you follow the directions for washing them and putting them on so that they last longer/work better.

  • Anywhere you have tightening in a joint (elastic) there's increased risk of venous stasis, which can lead to blood clots.

I wear jobst prescription thigh highs, which I was measured for, and have never had a problem. They don't slip at all. I wear them for 13 hours on my feet as an ER RN.

  • I have thigh high and all the way ups- they do sell maternity ones that I would probably do because I hate the way thigh highs feel after a day.   My doc would not approve the knee high's either- said they would not do any good from my memory.
