We're going to paint our kitchen cabinets.black. They are currently an ugly, outdated oak. We also have oak trim throughout the house that we are painting white. We recently purchased the house and it needs major updating!
We're not going for too modern of a feel, but more like second picture here:

Please recommend your black paint color best for cabinets and any tips would be helpful.
PS - I'm thisclose to hiring this job out, so if you went through this and it was pure hell, be honest so I can show this post to my husband.
TIA!
Re: XP: Have you painted your cabinetry black?
We also have oak cabinetry and contemplated painting it as well. I talked with an experienced cabinet painter and he said oak cabinets are tricky because you can see the woodgrain through the paint unless you use a filler to smooth out the grain before you paint or try to integrate the woodgrain look into your paint job by going for an antiqued feel.
My advice would be to hire the job out if you can afford it. From the research I did, it seems to be a long process that needs to be done precisely to get the desired end results. On the other hand, hiring someone to paint your cabinets is much cheaper than getting new ones! Good luck with whatever you decide. Be sure to post some pics!
My BFF has black cabinets. She hired it out.
I have white cabinets. DH did them. Took FOREVER since he only worked on them on the weekends.
If I had to do it again, I'd hire someone.
Cabinests that are already hung SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK to stain/paint. You have to sand, prime, sand again, prime, paint, wait to dry, add another coat. And then the hardware and doors,,,,ugh!
Sorry I'm no help on the particular color/stain.
Good luck!
I would first do a test run on the inside of one of your cabinet doors. Its a ton or work to repaint those suckers and a lot of times they don't come out that nice. Doing a test run may help you see how it would turn out. I would also get quotes for someone else to do it vs buying new cabinets.
I am not sure if its just that our area is hurting big time but its cheeper here to just buy new cabinets then to go through all that work.

Oh my goodness hire someone to do no matter what the price is....we painted our cabinets (not black) and it was pure hell.
Seriously, the devil himself was sitting back laughing at me when I was painting them. You paint one side and let it dry, flip it over to paint the other side and somehow no matter how dry the other side is it somehow always smudged. I used newspaper to lay them on and on more than one occasion the paper got stuck. There were drip line everywhere that I had to go back over....just thinking about it makes my head hurt. I was thisclose to chucking them all out of the house and buying new.
Never again.
(by the way I love black kitchen cabinets if your floors and countertops match)
I painted an outdated oak vanity in one of my bathrooms black. I also painted an oak wall unit white. Neither was hard, but both were time consuming.
Make sure you label the doors and the hardware from each because as much as they appear to be, they are not always interchangeable.
There are pics in my nest bio if you want to take a look.
I love the look of black cabinets! I say go for it, but if you can afford to, I'd hire someone. Painting cabinets can be a major PITA. If you are going to do it yourself. I would use Sherwin-Williams paint. We've renovated every room in our home and have used every kind of paint there is and SW paint is definitely the best that I've found. A little more expensive, but the quality shows, and makes painting so much easier. Especially for a color like black where streaks might be really visible and you may have to keep going over and over it again with a cheaper paint.
Thanks everyone! I'm convinced to hire it out. A friend of mine has a painter in the family that does work on the side, so I can probably get a pretty good rate.
I'm so excited now! I hated our house when we moved in because of it being so outdated. We truly bought it for the yard, location and layout.
Eventually, I'm going to reno the whole kitchen, but that will probably be another 5 years, This will help me survive until then.
